Ann Bens Jan 12, 2014 1:10 PM (in response to parisijewellery)Yellow Bar what it means:

If you want to work realtime with effects you need a graphicscard that supports Open CL.
One drive is not sufficient.

parisijewellery Jan 12, 2014 1:35 PM (in response to Ann Bens)Hi Ann Bens, thank you for such a quick reply!
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5750 1044mb graphics card, I've just looked on Wiki and it does say that it's compatible so I think that part of my dilemma is ok.
So I'm thinking that if I buy another drive, in your experience can I ask what advice you would give as to which project settings you would set up for which scratch disk please?
Also, have you had better results with one codec as opposed to another? I'm trying to use 25fps with 1080.
Again, thanks for your help.

SebastiaanFP Jan 12, 2014 1:46 PM (in response to parisijewellery)Paris,
One hard disk is for sure a big bottleneck (practically unworkable in video editing) slowing down whatever amount of RAM or Processor power you might have (unless it is a fast SSD, but even then, 2 or 3 are highly recommended). You will need at least one fast external HDD minimum speed of 7200rpm, preferably over Thunderbolt since you are on a Mac.
Secondly, I do not know what graphics card is on your Mac, but if it doesn't support live playback of video effects, then practically al your effects & edits you make will need to be pre rendered before you can see the result of what you actually did. (You can check the Adobe supported video cards for this)V ideo editing means serious computer hardware requirements, but many times just an external fast hardrive (or 2 or 3) will really speed up . improve things already a lot. For your situation this is probably the first hardware expansion you will need. And might be all you need if you do not do too huge special effects and the like.
For video playback you will need a graphics card with at least 1GB of dedicated videoRAM, and then PPRO can give it a try. If the card will be accepted it will speed up your real time effects playback quality and final output rendering big big time!
Your system is already simply going to freeze on the single harddrive, this needs to be expanded by adding for example a external RAID0 HDD drive like these:

All these topics are explained on the Tweakers page of the PPBM website:

Good luck & Greetz Sebastiaan.

parisijewellery Jan 12, 2014 2:02 PM (in response to SebastiaanFP)Hi Sebastian, thanks so much for your reply. I think I need to go and get myself some external hard disks and perhaps a bit more homework!
Thanks again, I really appreciate your tips as it's been driving me crazy.
Cheers

SebastiaanFP Jan 12, 2014 2:05 PM (in response to parisijewellery)Especially the homework is important so you understand what you need to buy, the buying is the easy part, but knowing what can improve your particular system is the more challanging part. I Shoot with a Canon EOS MIII, so our codecs and editing requirements will probably be quite the same.

parisijewellery Jan 12, 2014 2:36 PM (in response to SebastiaanFP)Cheers, every step gets me a little closer to getting to the fun creative pasrt of film-making. I'm using a Canon 6D.

7. Re: Clips from DSLR not playing back smoothly, not sure if I have a codec problem?
SebastiaanFP Jan 12, 2014 2:50 PM (in response to parisijewellery)Yes, but if you are just starting you probably should prepare for a few months of study:
- In-camera settings for shooting optimum video for post-processing
- video codecs and formats workflow
- computer hardware and software + configuration of these (of the OS and the Adobe Applications)
- the actual editing / workings of Premiere Pro
- monitor calibration and color accuracy workflow (at least a little bit of it)
Now you only need as much of these as you want, or my not need any of these according to what your aim / final video requirements are. And just simply start, and you will find any new answers to newly arising questions by Googling and Foruming away!
I just started myself about 6 months ago with zero background in this field of video and photo / computer graphics, so I know what it means to be starting in this big but also really beautiful field.

parisijewellery Jan 13, 2014 10:54 AM (in response to SebastiaanFP)Thanks Sebastian, I've done a bit of homework from the courses on Lynda.com about Premiere and Colour using Speedgrade so much more to learn though.
That Tweakers link you sent me was fantastic by the way, cheers.

John T Smith Jan 13, 2014 11:37 AM (in response to parisijewellery)>get myself some external hard disks
External eSata or USB3 are both fast enough for video editing... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1117813 - http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page/84-disk-setup
.
ONE possibility is this $47 USB3 dock with fan http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SuperSpeed-Docking-Station-Cooling/dp/B0055PL2YI
.
And, some comparison tests http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1144620

SebastiaanFP Jan 13, 2014 12:47 PM (in response to John T Smith)John,
Big thanks, that StarTech dockingstation looks to be such a great bang for the buck solution!!
Again thank you very much for posting this, I will very likely use some of those for some future expansions. Also really good they come with both USB3 and Esata ports.
