1. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Newsgroup_User Aug 6, 2006 10:07 AM (in response to Mile_High_Design)I'm afraid that there are no options.
The Templates folder must be in the root level of the local site.
You can share local sites between multiple local computers (I do this
frequently), but the only files that will be modified are those on the
*real* local site. Or am I misreading your question?

4. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Mile_High_Design Aug 6, 2006 11:34 AM (in response to Newsgroup_User)My laptop is my main computer with all of the websites located on it. Then I have a tower. Both are running Windows XP. They are both connected to a router. I have shared my main website directory with any computer on my local network.
When working on my Tower, I have been able to define the sites (pointing to the websites located in the shared folder on my laptop) rin Dreamweaver just fine. Just having issues with Templates and Library items. -

Newsgroup_User Aug 6, 2006 11:45 AM (in response to Newsgroup_User)Are you the only one working on the sites? If so, you shouldn't be having a
problem.

6. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Mile_High_Design Aug 6, 2006 12:10 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)Yes, I'm the only one working on both machines.
I do find it perplexing that Dreamweaver can find the sites and that I am able to define and edit them without any problems, but it just won't recognize the any changes made to Library and Template items.
But I am only having the problem with the sites pointing to the shared directory, not with any that are pointing to local files on the Tower.
Just an FYI... I also uninstalled and then reinstalled Dreamweaver twice to see if that would kick it into gear. No dice... -
7. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Newsgroup_User Aug 6, 2006 12:40 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)I have two systems -
A, and B
I have a site defined on A that points to a local folder on A.
I have a site defined on B that points to a folder on A.
If I am on B, and make changes to a template file in this site, it updates
files on A.
If I am on A, and make changes to a template file in this site, it updated
files on A.
Why are my results different than yours?

8. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Mile_High_Design Aug 6, 2006 1:12 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)You've got me... I have no idea.
All I can think of is maybe it has to do with my network settings (although if this was the case, nothing would work) or something in my DW preferences. -
9. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Newsgroup_User Aug 6, 2006 1:19 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)I doubt it's either of them. You can see the site on box A from box B,
right? You can open a template from the site on box B, right? You can make
changes to the template and save it back to box B, right? When you do that
are you prompted to update files?
Are your templates in a folder called "Templates" that is at the root of the
site on box A?

Yes. and it acts like it is updating the files... but when I open to make sure the change has taken place, it has not been done.

Yes.
You see my frustration... BTW... thanks for trying to work this out with me, I'm at my wits end!

11. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Newsgroup_User Aug 6, 2006 1:54 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)OK - get ready -
Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes not propagating
from Template to child -
1. Rename the Templates folder
2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other
than root level
3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
propagate)
5. Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server without also
uploading the changed local files
6. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page
is broken
7, Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the template,
adding page specific content, and resaving the template wiht an *.html
extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if this is the case
by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything like <!--
TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done)
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing them. Have you
done any of those?
Could your changes be in an editable region?
Can you create a new child page from the templates on box A, when you are
working on box B? If so, then the templates are working as expected, I
think.

12. Re: Issues with Library Items and Networked Drives
Mile_High_Design Aug 8, 2006 12:05 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)Hi Murray,
Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you on this issue. I didn't have time to deal with it again until today.
Well, after trial and error for the past 2 hours, you won't believe what it was...
When creating my site definitions on box B, I initially imported site definitions (.ste files) that I had exported from box A. My original definitions had the HTTP address filled in. Since they were on my local drive they worked perfectly fine on box A but confused Dreamweaver for some reason on box B.
Sooo... in the site definition dialog box - I deleted the HTTP address and left the field blank - and whalla! Problem solved.
I'm glad that mystery is solved. Thanks again for your time trying to figure this out with me! -
