Create a Character Style italic only and apply it to the first word.
Create a Character style, don't set anything other than the style of Regular (Or Semi, etc if you want the same style as the paragraph and numbering to match). Just don't choose an Italic style.
Go into your paragraph style, Bullets & Numbering section. Right below the Number field, there is a Character Style drop down. Pick your newly created Character Style.
You can now either change your paragraph style to italic, or highlight some words and change them to italic but the numbering will remain non-italicized.
Thanks. Simple solution...just annoying. ;^)
Assign a shortcut key to the character style. In the example below, I assigned CTRL+3 (number keypad #3). This changes the highlighted text to my character style. It's just as fast (keystroke-wise) as hitting ctrl+shift+i to italicize. So whether you are selecting one word or in this case to the first period, once the style is made, it's pretty quick.

Assigning character styles to entire paragraphs is bad practice.
Basically the numbering will play follow the leader.
1. Regular Text
2. Bold Text
The numeral usually takes on the format of the paragraph style.
What is the best thing to do?
Go into the Bullets and Numbering
In that dialog section of the Paragraph Style
There's a section to assign a Character Style to the numbering.
Create a new style from this drop down menu.
And choose Regular/Roman or whatver version of that font you want the numbering to be.
The numbers will always be Roman (or whatever you set)
There's an echo in here...
I think it's the time difference - I didn't have my coffee yet
Perhaps someone can swap the points around for the correct answer
Were you also looking at the Nested Styles thread where the OP wanted to use character styles for everything following the Headline paragraph style? That's how I took the initial wording of your post above.
As to the points? Don't care about that. There are a couple people here I feel comfortable poking while having my first cup of Joe. Unfortunately, you're one of them
Take care, Mike
Sorry guys, that was my fault. I had trouble following Mike's post at 5 am.
Look - I didn't even get a "helpful" ... thanks Pete
Geez. What a whiner.
You do know I have 4,000 other things to do today, right?
Yes, you did! But keep whinging, and I'll take it away!
