Are InDesign tables the best form of tables to work with?

I have a possible job for a catalog which is almost entirely page after page of tables. These tables are currently being constructed in Illustrator because they need extra type formatting that would not be possible in Excel, which is where the tables originate with the client. I'm trying to advise the client on the best way to have easily modifieable tables (client changes number of columns, screening background on some rows or columns year by year.)

Would InDesign be the best choice for building nice-looking tables that are flexible for client changes year-by-year, or, is there another software choice that would be better for doing this job?

      TIA,
