You're going to have to tell us more. Do you mean that you're getting a missing plug-ins message from InDesign plug-ins (exactly what does it say)?
Do you mean a third-party plug-in?
Hello and thank you for responding so quickly.
I am trying to open an Indesign file created on a newer version. It was saved as an .idml file. I receive two messages when trying to open it...
In the box it says "Shared content.InDesignPlugins" and below the box "File uses one or more plugins not currently aailable on your system."
2nd message after I click OK:
In the box it lists the following plugins: PDF.InDesignPlugin, FormField.InDesignPlugin, XML.InDesignPlugin, Generic Page Item.InDesignPlugin, Master Page Item.InDesignPlugin, Spread.InDesignPlugin, Text.InDesignPlugin, Dynamic Documents.InDesignPlugin, Sections.InDesignPlugin, Text Attributes.InDesignPlugin, Hyperlings.InDesignPlugin, Document Framework.InDesignPlugin, Graphics.InDesignPlugin.
Below the box it says "Please upgrade your plugins to the latest version."
This is a sure sign that you're opening an InDesign file created by a later version of InDesign. You'll need to get the person who created the document and save as IDML so you can open it in InDesign CS5.
I created the original document in InDesign CS5 sent it to an individual who is working with InDesign version 8 and printing the design from her laser printer. Some of the images weren't showing up when she printed them so she recreated the design in InDesign version 8 and saved it as an IDML file for me so I could work with it as well, but I can't open it.
Sounds more like she saved it as .indd and changed the extension to .idml, which is not the same thing at all.
What do you suggest?
Re-contact the other party and confirm that they Exported idml (which you are familiar with, talk them through, politely) os opposed to re-named as idml.
Or host the file and someone here will confirm
Thank you all for your help.
@Mighty Moth – you could test the "idml" file on "InDesign"ness with the script "identify.jsx" by Jongware available here:
[Ann] Identify Your InDesign File
A screenshot of the alert message the script will give you, if an InDesign file was re-named as idml:
