Upgrade your Photoshop, or adapt Lightroom to your workflow, or use the DNG converter. CS4 and compatible Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files from your camera. There will be no updates that will change that.
I used cs4 bridge to down load and convert to dng but it would not work, any other ideas? I am retired and do have a lot of money to keep going out and buying latest and greatest.
The DNG conversion in Bridge will only convert files that your version of Camera Raw already supports. You will need the latest version of the freestanding DNG converter program which is free and available from Adobe. I'm going to assume that you are Windows user. Here is the link to the Windows version of the program:
You need to download the program and install it and run the program. It is not a plug-in, and it is not part of Photoshop, Bridge, or Lightroom.
Just one word of advice. When you start the DNG converter you will be prompted to choose a FOLDER containing raw files. Be sure to just choose the folder, but don't open it. If you open the folder the DNG converter will tell you that there are no compatible files. If you want to convert just a single file, drag/drop that file onto the icon for the DNG converter. The program will start, and the conversion will take place.
Incidentally, I am 70 years old, and on the verge of retirement myself. I understand your situation completely. If you have any further questions about how to use the DNG converter, or whatever, feel free to ask. There are a bunch of very helpful people here who can get you through just about any problem.
I went to the link you sent me but I am not sure what version I should download should I down load 8.3?
You usually want the latest DNG Converter, unless it is not supported on your OS, so try DNGC 8.3, first.
