I am creating three 70-80-page booklets that share 90% of the content and layout. In the other versions, some pages are added/deleted and images are swapped out. There is also a Table of Contents. And one has a slightly different cover.
Is there a way to export 3 different PDF versions with the correct Table of Contents from one INDD file? I'm getting lots of changes and updating and splitting them out is getting tedious.
Here is one way to avoid splitting out the versions when changes are needed:
Start with a "Master version", place this into a blank InDesign file and duplicate it twice to make your 3 versions. (one quick method to do this is to first export the master version to PDF, use the place multipage PDF script, then replace the placed PDF with the original InDesign file in the links panel). Make the needed changes to each version by replacing the placed InDesign pages with new pages where needed, use layers to help identify the changed pages.
Any changes that apply to all 3 versions would be done to the master file, which would update all 3 versions. I believe the TOC would work, but I haven't tried it.
Thanks! That's a great solution!
