Elements 12 Organizer has stopped recognising .mts files

    Almac44

The Organizer has suddenly stopped being able to display .mts video files. It used to do this quite happily but now says it does not have the codec, and suggests installing Quick Time. I have done this but it does not help. Quick Time does not recognise files. The Premiere elements editor has no trouble with .mts files. I am running Widows 8.1 64 bit. Is this an Adobe or an Apple snarl-up?

          Hi Almac44,

It seems to be an issue with a conflict of codecs.

Please check if K-lite codec pack is installed on your system.

If yes please uninstall it from your system and restart it and try again.

For more information please have a look at the below thread

          Thanks

I don’t think The K-Lite codec pack is installed, at least I can’t find it.

              Hi Almac44,

Can you please try to rename any one file from.mts to .m2ts

Then try to check that file in elements organizer.

              Thanks

                Have you read the thread

                to which GautamBahl pointed you?

Please check out my contributions to that thread, including the simple fix of right clicking the thumbnail in the Elements Organizer 12, selecting Update Thumbnail. Have you been there and done that?

Typically the K-Lite codec pack is 3rd party. But, be careful downloading and installing any 3rd party codecs unless absolutely necessary. The after problems can be more problematic than the before problem in many instances.

                More later.

I have tried this. An old file which had a .m2s extension will not play, and a new file renamed will not import as it is not a recognised file type.

This link seems to be something different. I have looked at the original link but I do not think I have the K-Lite codec pack installed. Right clicking and selecting update thumbnail does not seem to do anything

                    Thanks for the reply

You might want to check out codecs already installed on your computer.

One way...do you have installed Windows Media Player 12?

If so, open Windows Media Player 12 and go to the Help Menu/Adobe Windows Media Player.

At the bottom of the dialog that opens, you should be "Techical Support Information". Click on "Technical Support Information" to get a comprehensive list of codecs installed on your computer.

Also, did we determine if you had installed on your computer

                      a. latest version of Windows Media Player

                      b. latest verison of QuickTime

                      c. Media Player Classic

Do you mean .mts files when you wrote .mps?

Are you going to try the Media Player Classic install?

If not, could you give the properties of the video file(s) involved, including brand/model/settings of the camera recording the video.

If you think that it would be to your advantage, I would appreciate the opportunity to work with a small sample of the video(s) involved. Would it be possible to post a Dropbox link to a download of that sample?

Typically in these types of problems, the symptoms are

                          a. Elements Organizer thumbnail which does not display the first frame (or any frame) of the video that it represents

                          and

                          b. In spite of the "no video frame display" within the Elements Organizer thumbnail, the video does play back (video and audio) within the Elements Organizer after it is double clicked there.

We will be watching for further developments.

                          Thank you.

                            Yes I did mean .mts

I have installed Media Player Classic. It works fine.

The recent files are from a Panasonic HC-X920 but the problem applies to all the video files in the organizer archive, which came from other Panasonic cameras. The archives were put together using earlier versions of Premier Elements and Pinnacle Studio. What seems to have happened is that the organizer has decided that it can only play video using Apple Quick Time as a viewer, where before it used its own viewer. This is shown by the fact it can play .mpeg files from the organizer, which appear in a (rather crappy) Quick time window which cannot be resized. Possibly one can obtain codecs for the Quick Time viewer – but what happened to the other one?

I think I have solved this problem. Uninstlling earlier verions can, it seems, sometimes result in a situation where Organizer does not recognize Premiere as being installed. To correct this uninstall both Premiere Elements and Photshop Elements (if you have it), thus uninstalling Oganizer, clean up the registry (I used Ccleaner) and then reinstall. Worked for me
