    confusion about framerate

    richard ar Community Member

I will try to keep it simple. I have got a lot off 5Dmark 2 footages most of them are 30 frames. And some 25 frames. I want to make a blu ray movie of all footages together.

Now I know if got a 30 frame footage and I export it as a 25 frame footage the picture is not smooth. I use to solve that with Twixtor in After Effects ( Twxtor is a framerate convertor) in After effects to change it from 30 to 25 frames. Benefit the results is smooth and the same length off footage. But this takes ages.

What about the other way round. If I got a 25 frames footage and I export this as a 30 frame footage. Does it has the same problem? I mean not smooth. I ask this because my eyes does not see it any more after watching and watching.

When I put a 30 frame footage on a 25 frame timeline the movie becomes shorter.( not with twixtor ) But the other way round when I put a 25 frame on a 30 frame timeline the length is the same.???????

So maybe someone can answer me if the theory and logic is right. I think it is more smooth to to change from 25 to 30 than from 30 to 25 frames.

Reason is because I have to decide to what framerate I export the total blu ray movie with Adobe Premiere CC I think 30 frames export is the best in this case but I am not sure.

thank you very much for reading this. any answer is welcome.

      greetings

      Richard

Going from 25 to 30 frames means that 5 extra frames per second need to be invented. Some machines, like the Snell Alchemist, do it very well (especially with movement) I have yet to find a software program that does it well.

            Hello Richard

            Thank's for the answer.

But the funny thing is the lenght off the 25 frame clip is the same on a 25 or 30 frame timeline from premiere .

Where does it get its frames from?

            greetings

            Richard

The frame rate does not affect clip duration. That would create chaos. Premiere figures out what it needs to do--either duplicating or skipping frames--to make content of a certain frame rate work in a sequence of a different frame rate, or when exporting a sequence of a certain frame rate to different one.

Enabling frame blending might yield smoother results. Learn more here.

The Alchemist and to some extent the timewarp effect in AFX looks at the motion of the pixels between frames and works out where these pixels would be if a frame was put between the two others. It uses these calculations to generate the 5 missing frames every second. ( This is a very simplistic explanation for what is a very complex calculation especially if it is done in realtime)
