I have received a boxed version, without a serial code.

The delivery method for Lightroom won't be relevant. You will still need to register your printer purchase with Epson, and they will then send you a valid Lightroom licence/serial number.
After that, it will be your choice whether to install the on-disk version you've received or - in order to get the most up-to-date version of Lightroom - to download the latest version (which I'd recommend).
The licence will work either way, but the disk version you've received is already likely to be out of date.

The disc I received did not come with the printer, it was supplied independently by the photographic store

I have contact Adobe in this regard, who have replied
'In this case I kindly request that you contact your place of purchase to get the serial number'
I am awaiting their response

Just register the printer online - you'll be sent an licence key.

Hi Kieth
The photographic dealer just called and helped me locate the serial number. It was well hidden under a sealed flap, three of us had checked the box time and time again without finding it.
Thanks for your advise, registering with Epson would have been an option if I hadn't purchased after the closing date.
