When I try to install Adobe Flash Player on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.8.5. I get an error msg

I can't seem to be able to install Adobe Flash Player on my MacBook Pro, with OS 10.8.5.  I get an error message – General installation error.   I have tried closing out Firefox with no success.  What do I need to do?

10.8.5 + General Installation Error = Missing mach_kernel file.
