why 2 files with identical names attached to one email?

When I attach an image file that I have processed in CS5 to an email, sometimes it seems that there are two files with identical names attached to the email. One is quite small (30-50 kb) and the other is the file I wished to attach (generally > 1 mb). Both end in either .jpg or .psd, as the case may be, but the first is unreadible and the second is fine.

My first thought ws a virus but jpg and psd files should be data files and not executable. And the settings on my Mac are to display all file extensions.

Any idea what is going on?
