Create new document reusing 90% of an existing .indd?

I have a 30 pg .indd document. I need to create 1 or more new documents based off of the original but with occasional paragraphs that are different. Approximately 90% of the document will stay the same.  Is there a way to use linked text or data merge or some combination of tools to maintain the 90% across all three documents and still have the occasional paragraphs different?

In my mind I would love to use a variable text that is linked to the name of the ID file so that if I open the "Brass.indd" file then all the paragraphs that are different for the brass model are open and if I open the "Copper.indd" file then all the paragraphs show the copper version.

      Hope that makes sense.
