If I understand correctly, what I would do is make one "master file" with all the unchanging data (and no footer), then place the pages of this file into your 9 magazines, each of which can have a custom master page.
The problem is what the master file when I need to update/edit test i still have to make changes to all 9 documents...
Im looking for the action of a master.
I basically need two different text masters for one page...
1 - editorial text and the other
2 - footer info
If you place the pages from the master file, you do all the editing of common changes in the master file itself, then update the links to it in the other docs, just like updating a graphic that appears in many files. You should only put content into this master file that will appear unchanged (except when you edit the master file) in your other documents.
Oh!! By masterfile do you mean using Incopy? Selecting and exporting to Incopy? (thats all I seem to find on the subject)
I cant find anything on using master files?
It would be great if I can just get the text on the 26 pages and save the entire thing and place it....
I did not mean InCopy, but that's also a possibility.
I mean make a "plain vanilla" document with a blank master page. In this file create all of the content that is common to all 9 magazines. Place the pages of this file (just as you would place photos or a PDF) into your 9 magazine files, each of which has it's own customized master page to add the appropriate master page objects.
OK. I have my plain vanilla copy saved as master file. I understand what you are saying about placing - just like photos.
When I go to place the master_file.indd it just places the first page (i assumed it may give a choice of pages).
How do I choose a page to place? Or do I have to export the pages individually?
Yes, there should be a choice if you show the import options, but I'm actually quite partial to the script you'll find at InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Zanelli Releases MultiPageImporter for Importing both PDF and INDD Files
I defiantly will check out the script..
But i must say if you were sitting here i could kiss you!!! This is my second month working on these pubs and last month was spent opening, editing, saving for days!!! I would get a call that we missed a period and have to open, save up for printer, save down for the marketing dept.
THis is exactly what I am looking for. I have some layouts that have crazy text boxes and this preserves that.
Thank you so much!!!
Either you can use Alternative Layouts in one document, you will need only to work on the first layout, the text in the outher layouts or you can the Content-Tools and Create LInk option to take the original and place it into the new document. Later you have only to update the links in the link panel. You can take by option the whole page with all elements.
