Opacity will go from 100% to 0% in the smallest increment of your project's timebase. If you're editing in 30fps, it takes 1/30 second to do the job. If you are trimming the layer, at frame 00:01:00 the layer will be visible and at the next frame, 00:01:01, it will be gone. But that still took 1/30 second to occur. If youare editing in a 60fps timebase, the smallest increment between images is 1/60 second. Your audience's visual acuity and retention of vision may not register a change that happens that quickly.
