My company is thinking about buying new Dell workstations that include NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 650 graphics cards. I don't see this card listed as one of the certified cards for AE, but do see similar cards like the GTX 670, listed. Will AE work with the GTX 650, or can it be made to work with the GTX 650? Thank you for any help on this question.
The GPU is used for very little in After Effects. There is one feature that that relies on it, but it isn't use much in most workflows (the 3d ray-traced renderer) as it's been superceded by the inclusion of Cinema 4D Lite. Read more about GPU's in AE here. There are some third-party plugins that make use of the GPU (Knoll Light Factory, Element 3d, etc.), but their requirements are different from AE's white list.
Do you plan to do a lot of work with ray-tracing? If not, then don't worry: an approved card really, REALLY speeds up ray-traced rendering, but that's about it. You'll be better off getting a boatload of memory, as in 32GB & up.
So: no ray-tracing? Get a card based on the requirements of OTHER software you haven't talked about.
