Download this file Secrets Preference Pane
Install Secrets, and open your System Preferences.
Open the Secrets Preference Pane, and check "Show hidden files"
You'll need to press the "Quit this" button,
and restart Finder, by right clicking the Dock icon.
The go to your Mac HD directory and look for the "mach_kernel" file.
It'll be "faded" because it's a hidden file.
If it isn't there, post back.
I am getting the same "general download error" message at around 50% of the install process. I followed your directions for Secrets download and the "mach_kernel" file is not there. Can you provide any further help?
OS 10.8.5 or 10.9?
I have the 10.9 and I have done process above with the secret files download and the Mach kernel file appears, but did not change the error message.
Download the FULL Installer: Flash Player 126.96.36.199 (Mac OS X)
Save the file, quit your browser and mount the DMG.
DO NOT RUN the installer.
Right click and choose "Show Package Contents"
Then in Contents/Resources, double click the Adobe Flash Player.pkg
and run the COCOA installer
AHHH YAY Finally!!! You are amazing. Thank you so much Mike. I was about to throw my computer away, I have been so frustrated with this issue. For future reference, is there any reason why this happened?

"Pure meanness..." as a friend used to say.
Honestly, I haven't the faintest idea.
I found the "mach_kernel" file. What do I do with it now?
That didn't solve the problem, because the "mach_kernel" file was already in the correct directory. I ended up calling Apple Technical Support & they guided me through resolving this problem. There were too many steps for me to remember, to be able to post them all here, but we did finally fix the problem & Flash is now running properly on my Macbook.
