Have you set the file association in Adobe Bridge Preferences?

Yes, that is all set correctly.
ok, here is what was wrong: in the registrey there was a key pointed to the old Fireworks location. After altering that and pointing it to the new location all is working well. The firoworks.exe is now seen within the Default Programs and that can be used to set as the default program to open PNG files.
the registry key was located here: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Fireworks.exe\shell\open\command
