I expect to see this process in the Activity Monitor, but I'll take your word for the fact that it's not showing up for you.
You can restart your computer to make sure that all Adobe applications and their processes are stopped, and then install the update:
I am also having similar issues with the 12.2.1 AE CC update failing.
Tried several times yesterday using updater app - failed each time.
Finally found the downloadable update from Todd's link above. Restarted. Ran installer. Failed again.
Nothing running in Activity Monitor, other than 2 instances of 'Adobe CEF Helper'.
And since this update failure began (yesterday), I can no longer launch AE CC. AE CS6 works OK, but not CC.
System Info: Macbook Pro 15" Retina (mid-2012)

You should uninstall and then re-install After Effects.
When you re-install After Effects, it wil install the most recent version, so you won't need to worry about this problem with updating.
Could this be related to the update to the Creative Cloud app from wednesday itself maybe I wonder...
restarted my Mac. Same problem.
Downloaded the IMG update file now. Restarted my Mac- again - ran installer from disk image. Result? Same message now in another dialog from the updater:
Something is wrong here. I dare not to uninstall anything as it seems clear that ANY install now from Creative Cloud app will fail due ti this Crash deamon!!!!
And no: no deamon shows up in the Activity Monitor!
Uninstalling AE CC, rebooting, then re-installing from the Application Manager did the trick for me! Thanks, Todd!
