Since in animate 3.0, you can simply load external script libraries, can't you use any existing jquery lazy loader? There are loads ( pardon the pun) out there...
Thank you for your help and sorry for my late answer! Had been on vacation the last few days and now I'm back to work.
To use a jquery preloader it would be necessary for me to disable the Animate Preloader (it always loads the complete animation first and starts to display background, text etc. afterwards, even if it is set to immediate).
But how can I do this? There is no option for it in Edge Animate so I thought of editing the preload.js - without any luck. It simply didn't work as expected.

There is another way to do other than modifying the preloader.
I will be using "Lazy Loading Plugin for Jquery " (http://www.appelsiini.net/projects/lazyload ) to illustrate my example.
You can add this library to your project using the 'Script Loading' feature in EA3
Create placeholder Rectangle for your images.
In creation complete add the code to insert the image tag like
sym.$("Rectangle").append('<img class="lazy" data-original="images/example.jpg" width="640" height="480">');
Images addes like this should load lazy.
Hope this is helpful to you.
