Discretionary hyphens don't always seem to work

I'm laying out a document and some of the lines have a lot of space between the words. I've fooled around with character spacing, but in a couple of cases I want to use discretionary hyphens to break up a word. But InDesign doesn't do it, even when I can see that there is enough space to take part of the word up to the line before. I can see the discretionary hyphen, so I am doing that right. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?

      I'm using InDesign CS5.5 on Windows 7.

      Thanks!
