Can you try the below mentioned steps?
1) Quit ADE if it is running.
2) Take backup/move the books from "My Digital Editions" folder in Documents folder to a different location.
3) Launch ADE

I have the same problem except:
I am running Windows 8
Yesterday, when it was working, I updated to SDE 3.0 from 2.0 and everytime I run it I get the message above.
I uninstalled 3 and re-installed 2 but the error did not go away.
I tried the fix suggested above with no effect.
I have un-installed 2.0 and cleaned out anything that was hanging around.
Unplugged my reader and started up ADE.
Uploaded a book and, for a few minutes at least, it was stable.
Plugged in my reader, a Kobo touch, and within seconds I go the ADE 3.0 has stopped working message.
Thanks I just uninstalled 2.0 and 3.0 and am using 1.7.2 which is working
