1. Re: 3D shaped spiral that starts flat and then rises upwards
W_J_T Feb 19, 2014 2:48 PM (in response to federatedfilms)Search the forum for 3D Spiral, similar has been discussed previously. Or post an example image of what you're hoping to accomplish.

Steve Fairbairn Feb 19, 2014 3:42 PM (in response to federatedfilms)Try mapping (diagonal) lines onto cone shapes in 3D Revolve.

Monika Gause Feb 20, 2014 12:20 PM (in response to federatedfilms)The lines need to mapped as artwork onto ths 3d shape.

7. Re: 3D shaped spiral that starts flat and then rises upwards
federatedfilms Feb 20, 2014 12:27 PM (in response to Monika Gause)can you detail how to map artwork onto the 3d shape as Adobe have gone and broken all links to videos in their help files, when you click on a specfic help video it just goes to a generic page stating choose a tutorial from a long list!

Monika Gause Feb 20, 2014 1:19 PM (in response to federatedfilms)It's all in the manual.

9. Re: 3D shaped spiral that starts flat and then rises upwards
dougofakkad Feb 21, 2014 1:25 AM (in response to federatedfilms)i'll take you through my steps. i'm not the most efficent user so there's probably a better way of defining the symbol at least, but there we go. Make a blend, or any other way you like of drawing a bunch of parallel diagonal lines to your taste. Expand the blend, make sure smart guides are on, select all the points at one end and shift-drag until the top anchor of one is level with the bottom anchor of the next one up. this is to ensure the symbol lines would be contiguous with one placed next to, or on top of, it.
draw a box with corners that coincide with the points in your diagonal lines. this is to define the limits of the symbol.
select just your diagonal lines, go to object > path > outline stroke. select your lines and the box, go to pathfinder palette > divide.
delete everything that lies outside the box you drew earlier, including things like rounded caps that protrude.
drag the whole thing to your symbols palette.
draw a line that curves upwards, like one half of the water spout. give it a stroke so you can see what you're doing initially. go to effect > 3D > revolve. make sure it's going from the correct edge and give it an offset if you like.
click 'map art'. select the outside face, select your new symbol. it'll appear on the map of the object. scale it to fit. select invisible geometry.

10. Re: 3D shaped spiral that starts flat and then rises upwards
federatedfilms Feb 21, 2014 12:15 PM (in response to dougofakkad)Thanks dougofakkad for all that detail; I'm not quite getting your results as I didn't quite follow how you deleted all the rough edges outside the box (in step 4), I just applied a cliping mask, but that created a gap?
So I just streteched the Symbol beyound the limits of the box in the Map Art option and that closed the gap but now it's just the lines dont join up properly. I pressume this is to do with what angle you drew the lines in the first place? What Angle where yours?

dougofakkad Feb 24, 2014 12:31 AM (in response to federatedfilms)i used pathfinder > divide and deleted the extra, but i just realised you could use pathfinder > crop. i always forget something.

12. Re: 3D shaped spiral that starts flat and then rises upwards
federatedfilms Apr 15, 2014 2:28 AM (in response to dougofakkad)Now I have my spiral, the lines don't quite join up perfectly, so I wanted to break the object up into individual vectors so I can tweak the look, but I cant see hwo to do that?
So how do I break apart a 3D Revolve object so I can edit it?

Monika Gause Apr 15, 2014 5:35 AM (in response to federatedfilms)Object > Expand appearance.
But don't expect that you can easily edit it.
