Describe what you want to accomplish.
As I mentioned, I make an annual catalogue with 10,000 items, and from the layouts, a data report is downloaded (using AutoPrice) to create data (in Excel) for website upload. Each item in the catalogue has a product name, description, SKU, price and image. I want a way to identify which product sets had edits made to it (fixed spelling errors, updated product name, etc.). I know I can view this with tracking in story editor, however, I'd like to extract that data somehow so I can compare and know which products need updating on the website or not. If no edits where made, then I don't see a need to create data for the website of that product. If I could extract the data of those with edits, I can then know which do need a new web upload. I have yet to figure out how to do the comparison (v-lookup?), but just curious about step 1. Hope that is clear. Maybe there is a program or separate plugin I need to purchase for this? Just need live tracking that I can view in something other than InDesign. THANKS!
You need a data base connection plugin which allows you to write changes done in InDesign back to the database. The database has also to have an output mdule for you web site, which is easy to accomplish.
Search for InDesign and Databas, or catalog plugins. There are several on the market. I don't have experienc with them so I am not entitled to evaluate them.
They have a trial: http://www.65bit.com/products/easycatalog/overview/overview.shtm
Thanks. I have to further investigate if my current catalogue plugin (AutoPrice) will allow me to extract that data. Nothing jumps out that I can, but by your reply, it sounds like plugins like that should have this feature. I'll look somemore. THANKS!
