Creating a graphic to follow the path of a moving object

I work with sports highlight videos and am new to after effects. What Im trying to do is create a graphic that follows the path of a baseball from the release in the pitchers hand all the way to the cathchers glove, similar to pitch track. What is the best way to achieve this effect using after effects.

Lots of ways to do this. The best method depends on the shot. They all involve motion tracking, not 3D camera tracking.

Here's an example that uses stabilization to fix the target (students face, but in your case, the baseball) in the frame, add a graphic, then remove the stabilization and transfer the motion information to the position of the graphic.

If the shot is not compatible with this kind of a solution you can simply track the motion of the baseball and apply the tracking info to a layer containing the graphic.

Depending on the angle from which the video was shot, a motion track may or may not work.

Is it one of those really-long-lens shots from center field where you see pitcher, catcher & batter?  You stand a good chance of getting a track you can use.

Is it a shot from the dugout area, and the ball is basically a blur?  You might have to do it by hand.

In either case, it's only a small number of frames when the ball is in flight.  Certainly less than a second.
