cf 10 500.0 Internal Server Error

    MonkeySaysWhat1

I can't believe Adobe has the nerve to charge what they charge for ColdFusion, but they can't even make it install correctly on IIS 7.

How do we get past the 500.0 Internal Server error in IIS 7 when trying to hit the CF Admin page after install?

Do you get a more detailed description of the error on the error page (usually below the HRESULT code)?

And ColdFusion installs just fine on IIS 7+ for most users, if they follow all of the installation instructions carefully (especially with regard to the IIS component prerequisites).  Most of the time (but not always) when people have posted here with errors following the installation, it turns out to be that they didn't follow all of the instructions.

For the kind of money they're charging, they should solve these issues - Apple does.

There are at least two likely culprits for this error - either the web connector did not install properly, or there is a permissions issue with the ColdFusion folder structure.

Did you install the mandatory updater and the latest hotfixes yet?  Can you remove and reinstall the web connector using the Web Server Configuration Tool (be sure to "Run as Administrator")?

When you installed ColdFusion, did you follow the installation instructions and the ColdFusion 10 Lockdown Guide?  The guide lists specific permissions that must be granted to the user account the ColdFusion service runs under.

                Hi MonkeySaysWhat1,

You will need to remove the connector and restart the CF services and IIS. After that, please recreate the connector.

To test CF working, you can enable the internal port and test CF Admin, prior to recreating the connector.

                Regards,

                Anit Kumar

Are you kidding me?  I have to "remove the connector"??  Isn't that your softwares job?

Where is a step by step guide on doing that?

Mandatory Updater?  Is this some sort of government program where Abobe MANDATES I do something they should have done in the first place?  Hotfixes?  I just downloaded the program, it should be up to date!  Lockdown?  Again, why am I doing Adobe's job?

Mandatory update installed.  Web connector dropped and reapplied.  Still error 500.  And we wonder why ColdFusion is dying.

Error 500 (Internal Server Error) is a webserver related error , IIS in your case. As Carl mentioned, probably IIS is unable to communicate with ColdFusion properly. When you create connector during installation, you may get this type of error (not always). The best way is to remove the connector and follow the steps mentioned in my post

Mandatory update includes security certificate and Adobe recommends applying the same. Here is the Installation guide (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/10.0/Installing/coldfusion_10_install.pdf).

If you are still getting 500, please check the exception and application log. You may try removing the connector and checking the application then. This would help you narrow down the issue.

                        Regards,

                          @MonkeySaysWhat1,

The mandatory update thing is to patch a problem with Adobe's security certificate (this is not the fault of the ColdFusion development team but of the top-level Adobe security certificate process) which then allows you access to the rest of the ColdFusion 10 updates.  Adobe rebuilt the installers already to integrate a previous mandatory update, but a new mandatory update came out after that.

And while it would be nice if Adobe reissued installers after each update comes out, that is not really feasible.  They would have had to do that 15 times to date (counting 13 updates and two mandatory certificate updates).  How would people keep track of which version of the installer they had?  And if an update breaks a previously working build (which has happened), how could people revert back to a previous build to at least be functional until the broken update is fixed?

Anyway, now that you have installed the mandatory update, follow Anit's instructions to remove the IIS connector, and re-enable the internal port so you can access the CF Administrator using the built-in web server.  Then apply the latest update (update 12 is the latest that is relevant to Windows as update 13 only fixed a Mac OSX issue).  This will include a bunch of web connector fixes.  Once update 12 is installed, run the Web Server Configuration tool to reconnect IIS.

                          -Carl V.
