1. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
JSS1138 Mar 1, 2014 11:54 PM (in response to ALLENT)I've used it on several projects now, including a couple shorts and two that were an hour plus long. So far, it works pretty well, and has not crashed. Though because we can't actually create grading layers in SG just yet, I do find myself popping back over to PP often, and my SG sessions are rarely over 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

ALLENT Mar 2, 2014 8:25 AM (in response to JSS1138)How long does it take SG to load (via direct link) a 60 min project?

3. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
ALLENT Mar 2, 2014 10:58 AM (in response to JSS1138)Yeah... maybe I am thinking way too OLD SCHOOL, meaning LOCK picture edit, then Color Grade, then export a Final master. This direct link workflow seems much more like a "flip it back and forth" between PP and SG on a continual basis. Almost a grade while you edit mentality. What do you mean by not being able to create a "grading layer"? Am I missing something?

4. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
JSS1138 Mar 2, 2014 3:16 PM (in response to ALLENT)Takes only a few seconds to load any project.
And because I never get picture lock, even after delivery, I must have the ability to change my edit, while keeping my corrections and grading. Direct Link is the only way to do that.
SpeedGrade can normally create grading layers, much like Adjustment Layers in Premiere Pro. Except with Direct Link, that ability is disabled, so I often have to pop back over to PP and create Adjustment Layers as needed.

5. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
R Neil Haugen Mar 3, 2014 2:14 PM (in response to JSS1138)Allent,
In direct-link mode, Speedgrade is using a PrPro project file directly ... and is NOT allowed to "touch" that file until you specifically tell it to go back to PrPro. That's a part that is oft mis-understood. It has a few major things to "know" or you'll get frustrated.
First, as you've discovered, there is NO auto-save while working on a direct-linked project in EITHER PrPro or Sg. So ... if you're over in Sg working for more than a few minutes, it is wise to manually save, perhaps adding an iterative letter/number, so that you've got your work to that point protected in case of crash.
Second ... as Sg is locked out of changing the timeline of a PrPro project file in any way, you cannot add a grading layer to the timeline from Sg in a direct-link session. So ... one needs to create any additional/supplemental grading layers one will need in Sg BEFORE leaving PrPro, by putting "adjustment layers" over the sequence or specific clips you'll want to use a separate grading layer on within Sg.
Third ... another hitch some people have been befuddled by is that when you first apply a Lumetri "look" or a LUT, it's in "preview" mode. You need to hit enter or a couple other things that Sg takes as "accepting" that look/LUT permanently before going back to PrPro or that effect doesn't "save" to the project.
So ... any timeline changes have to be done in PrPro. Corrections/grading done in Sg. Saving a file under work in a direct-link Sg session is manual ... and wise. And yes, this is now suited for working while editing, taking over sub-sequences perhaps is a way to look at it? There are some changes in workflow ... but as you get used to them, it is so much simpler than working edl's or DPX or those sorts of things. And quicker.

Rob_Grauert Mar 4, 2014 6:19 AM (in response to ALLENT)who edits on 1 video track?
I do. I hate messy timelines, and I especially hate opening up someone else's messy timeline that's full of extra unnecessary video tracks.
Anyone actually ever use SG for a real project before???
My most successful use of SpeedGrade was exporting a self-contained video from Premiere, and then importing that into SpeedGrade. Then I'll use the Scene Detector to find the cuts and add them manually as needed.
This would be fine for me except for the fact that SpeedGrade and Premiere are showing me two different images on my reference monitor... Yea... BIG PROBLEM

7. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
MannyEdwards Mar 4, 2014 12:13 PM (in response to ALLENT)I think the whole idea of "non-linear" color grading is stupendous, and if SG ever gets direct link working, I'll be very interested. Unfortunately, so far I have found it unusable. For one thing, I can't live with just one grading layer. For another, the monitors don't respond in realtime. Finally, it locks up or shuts down for any number of random reasons. I have a stable workflow with DaVinci Resolve, so I can't really justify the time to poke and prod and invent all sorts of workarounds to get SG up and running -- I'll just have to wait until Adobe releases a functional version.

8. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
R Neil Haugen Mar 4, 2014 10:39 PM (in response to MannyEdwards)Hey, if DaVinci is working great for you, great. We've always got to get work out, right?
I've created multiple adjustment layers both over clips and groups of clips and then multiple over a whole sequence in PrPro before going to Sg (so it could use them as grading layers), and it worked just fine. I do know that some with multiple monitors have had nasty difficulties, yet some with multiple monitors and external scopes are working just fine. And some have had the occasional and VERY irritating freeze.
I've had one nasty crash back in December, lost two hours of work, lesson: manually save a direct-link session as there's no auto-save going on. I've had some sessions suddenly slow up to the point I saved, closed out, and re-opened the program. We're all hoping that someday soon these things will all be past. Still, the vast majority of my work does go through just fine.
Wish it were the same for you ...

9. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
MannyEdwards Mar 6, 2014 8:55 AM (in response to R Neil Haugen)Me too. As I said, I like the idea of direct link, and SG has some nice features, but certain basic functions kill the deal, like the fact that it takes several seconds to get visual feedback of any grading adjustments. And the fact that randomly the scopes don't update unless I play and pause. I just can't work like that. I've been trying it every few months to see if it's working. Maybe some day.

You need a new GPU. I don't even have a beefy GPU and I don't experience that. Buy yourself a Quadro 4000 or sumpin'

11. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
MannyEdwards Mar 6, 2014 9:14 AM (in response to Rob_Grauert)Negative. My GPU works fine with Resolve, Color, PPro's 3-way Color Corrector, Blender, AE, and on and on. It's SpeedGrade.

I don't see that here, either. Both the scopes and the view update in realtime with my adjustments.

13. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
Rob_Grauert Mar 6, 2014 9:41 AM (in response to JSS1138)Ooops. MannyEdwards is correct.
I watched the SpeedGrade tutorials on Lynda.com and I remember this was one of the differences between using Direct Link vs using SpeedGrade alone. With Direct Link the UI does update really slow. If you use SpeedGrade alone, the UI works fine.

JSS1138 Mar 6, 2014 7:27 PM (in response to Rob_Grauert)Again, the UI updates just fine here with Direct Link. I don't think it's normal not to.

vilrockerdefer Apr 19, 2014 8:36 AM (in response to JSS1138)Hello,
Using 7.2.1 on windows with gpu accel, I have the same problem : perfectly fast in native mode, and very slow ui response in direct link.
Any help welcome. My PP timeline is a 52' mix of ex3, 5d and gopro.

16. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
R Neil Haugen Apr 19, 2014 9:58 AM (in response to vilrockerdefer)First suggestion ... when going DiLink to Sg, close out PrPro ... Sg can pull up the internal parts of PrPro code it needs without the rest of the program running, may be of some help.
Next ... for those of us with non-optimal machines, there are things that can slow it down. I'd note, the amount of cash spent on video cards say doesn't necessarily translate into faster operation. It's having the right combinations of CPU, GPU/s, ram & disk setup, that sort of thing. My minimalist machine does slow a bit in DiLink mode also.
And ... I understand they are working at maximizing performance for most machines in DiLink mode, as that I think is seen as the future of the program.

17. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
vilrockerdefer Apr 19, 2014 12:41 PM (in response to R Neil Haugen)Hello again, thanks for the tips
What worked for me :
- dividing my 52 minutes into 6 smaller parts
- removing third-party (cpu/gpu consuming) plugins
The ui lag becomes smaller, the more effects you remove/the smaller your timeline.

20. Re: Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work?? Does SG actually work???
R Neil Haugen Apr 19, 2014 3:39 PM (in response to vilrockerdefer)I'd guess the inter-action of Speedgrade and PrPro is kinda extra-complicated ... both programs can run different computers into the ground, invoking bits of both is almost undoubtedly an interesting exercise in re-coding operational "tools" besides the native program code complexity. Each "iteration" of DiLink gets better, so ... I'm pleased with what we've got so far as it is SO much better than sending an EDL or DPX export out of PrPro & then rendering from Sg was back in the ol' CS6 days of just what ... a year ago?
As the Beatles sang ... "It's getting better all the time ... " though naturally we all want it perfect (in the very different ways we each see & define "perfect") ... and that right now. Still, so many things that I'm doing now could NOT have been done near this easily nor fast a year ago.
