    render crash 4K comp

    flunk3929

I am working with 2 CS6 comps (sized 4096x2304) both with a 4K 25000 and a 30000 frames sequence using lots of ramping with timewarp.

I need to render out 2k and 4k quicktime prores masters.

On the desktop machine (which has 64GB of RAM see specs below) I have experienced crashes every time when outputting 2k from the 4k comps while there is no problem at all rendering any of the comps from my laptop (both CS6 and CC).

This has been going on for two weeks with me not being able to produce results on the client's machine.

I have changed memory settings based on other posts and then managed one successful render from the shorter timewarp comp but today After Effects stopped and got stuck rendering again.

I don't have the problem if timewarp is disabled or if the comp is set up at 2k with timewarp. But that doesn't help as only timewarp does the job.

I don't really want to render image sequences if I can help it.

Is this a quicktime problem or is After Effects not set up for 4k on specific platforms.

      Multiprocessing or not multiprocessing?

      Any suggestions ?

My partial one render success was with these Memory settings:

RAM reserved for other applications: 30GB

RAM available for After Effects 34 GB

      Render multiple frames ticked

CPU reserve for other apps 14

RAM allocations per background CPU 2GB

actual CPUs that will be used 10

What are the exact version numbers of After Effects that you are using (for both machines)?

            Hi Szalam

laptop: CC Version 12.1.0.168  and CS 6 11.0.3 ( the client uses CS6 so I kept  it for compatibility)

            desktop: CS6 11.0.2.11

None of your applications are up to date. The most recent update for After Effects CS6 is 11.0.4, and the most recent update for After Effects CC is 12.2.1:

                Hi Todd,

                thanks for you suggestion.

That's true and I did upgrade the desktop: CS6  to 11.0.4 last night before another render just to eliminate this as a potential problem.

However, After Effects crashed again after rendering about 2 min worth.

So, I don't think the version of After Effects is the culprit here. Any other ideas?

                Trying tiff sequence next.

                many thanks

                  Check composition settings>Advanced>Shadow map

Check, by holding down the shift key while opening preferences Preferences>Secret and set purge after every couple of frames.

                  Turn of MP rendering

If that doesn't work try a 4K render with different source footage, even a still. If it works with different footage or a simplified comp then go back to your original comp and start turning things off one at a time until your render succeeds.

                    hi Gerard

thanks very much for your comments.

I am still working though your suggestions to find the problem while working on several projects. Please could you tell me what the settings should be for Composition settings/Shadow map?

My composition settings>Advanced>Shadow map are: Classic3d: shadow map resolution: comp size.

I tried the purge idea but that was unsuccessful, looking at removing keyframes/replace footage next.

                    many thanks
