cc_merchant Mar 9, 2014 8:07 AM (in response to Adrinnn)Get a nVidia GTX 760M or better video card and at least 2 additional 7200 RPM (e)SATA or USB3 disks, preferably more..

Adrinnn Mar 9, 2014 9:30 AM (in response to cc_merchant)Hello,
What laptops have a 760M availible? We plan on using usb3 scratch disks to edit, and the 128 GiB SSD to store programs.

ECBowen Mar 10, 2014 9:04 AM (in response to Adrinnn)The laptop's with the Nvidia 800 series mobile chips are starting to release or will be in country in the next week or 2. I suggest you wait for those.

Adrinnn Mar 10, 2014 12:09 PM (in response to ECBowen)Hello,
I want to do that, though, the problem that I face is that I also would have to wait for reviews on those computers too. The only reason I got to that dell was because I went to notebookcheck.net and read up on the computer in depth.

Bill Gehrke Mar 10, 2014 2:59 PM (in response to Adrinnn)Well the Dell has a one generation old CPU it does not have the nVidia GPU that is essential and probably no expansion room for another drive.

8. Re: Laptop for Editing BMCC (2.5K) RAW
ECBowen Mar 11, 2014 9:02 AM (in response to Adrinnn)Bill is right and I would definitely not get that Dell. There are many reviews on the Asus laptops or Clevo's that include the current Haswell Mobile CPU's. Those are the 4000 series mobiles. There should be reviews on the new shells releasing quickly because there will be allot of interest in the Nvidia 800 series GPU's.

Bill Gehrke Mar 12, 2014 6:38 PM (in response to ECBowen)Eric,
I am shocked by the new GTX 880M, the unit has the same cores as the GTX 780M (1536) but the other critical specification for MPE acceleration memory bandwidth is screwy. The old GTX 680M has a memory bandwidth of 160 GB /second while the new high end GTX 880M has only 64 GB/second. What gives????
The new ASUS G750JZ has the GTX 880M

Adrinnn Mar 13, 2014 5:45 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Hello Bill,
Do you know when official support for 8xxM GPUs for the Mercury Playback Engine will be supported? Also, we're going to eventually use an external display that's10 bit panel, which is another reason as to why I'm more interested in Quadro/FIrePro GPU solutions.

11. Re: Laptop for Editing BMCC (2.5K) RAW
ECBowen Mar 13, 2014 8:27 AM (in response to Adrinnn)The laptop would require a Displayport out and a Quadro card for a 10bit color panel off the video card.

12. Re: Laptop for Editing BMCC (2.5K) RAW
ECBowen Mar 13, 2014 8:30 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)That is a good question. I was waiting for Nvidia to put up the specs for the new cards. The 860m to the 880m have the same ram specs which is very different than what Nvidia normally does. I will have to test this when we get a unit.

13. Re: Laptop for Editing BMCC (2.5K) RAW
Adrinnn Mar 13, 2014 10:36 AM (in response to ECBowen)Hello Eric
Would running RAID 0 on two 7200 rpm spinning disks be sufficient for reading the video? I'm asking this because I can meet the strict budget, $2500 for the computer, and get a Quadro K4000M, if I don't use an SSD. Could I benefit from external RAID array, and if so, what options would I have for external RAID.

15. Re: Laptop for Editing BMCC (2.5K) RAW
Adrinnn Mar 13, 2014 12:24 PM (in response to cc_merchant)Thank you for the help on that! Based on reading those articles, I need a 128-256 GiB SSD and a 2 TB Drive internally, and a 1 TB 7200 RPM scratch disk at least over USB 3. It looks like I'll have to get a desktop just on the basis of storage.
