I just tried the 32 bit version -- took a while to load for the first time, but works fine. I have the 64 bit version of Windows 7 installed. So, what gives? I may try rebooting, and having windows start in safe mode, and see if the 64 bit version will work.

Good plan as believe that load without plugins. 3rd party fonts and plugins, along with drivers are most common causes of crashes.
Did you update the video card driver from makers site? CS6 and CC stresses it a lot more than CS5.5
it is amazing how the little stuff will bring everything to a screetching halt -- I had assumed that my computer tech who built my computer had installed the latest drivers -- nope, he missed that one. After installing -- everything works fine now. Except Photoshop takes FOREVER to load -- it seems to wait for an eternity on "measuring memory" -- strange...Thanks Curt for your reminder to check the drivers.
PS should take less than 10 seconds to load. You might want to read this thread for clues. Since it is new it could be bad memory which should still be under warranty. Hope this helps http://forums.adobe.com/message/4852600
