You can click the dropdown button at the top-right hand corner of the panel, choose "Panel Options" then place a check next to "Format" in the "Show Column" checkbox. Then you can sort your links by file format, which really isn't exactly what you were asking for, but is awfully close.

BobLevine Mar 20, 2014 12:55 PM (in response to Ceencha)Because they are. When you place an AI file, InDesign reads the PDF portion of the file. If you were to save without PDF compatibility you wouldn’t be able to place the file.
