Caliberating iMac screen for B&W printing

I have been using Photoshop for years but its only recently I have had commissions that end up being printed.

I'm currently working on black and white pictures of a local church for a guide book and have just had them printed for the first time. The prints, as I expected, come out darker than on the screen and it was my intention to caliberate the screen to these prints. However the brightness setting they match is the darkest the imac can go. This seems strange to me that I have to basically work with the darkest brightness setting possible. Any tips on how to caliberate the screen or on whether the photoshop file needs to be set to a certain profile for this kind of work? Or whether I need to specify a certain type of print out from the printer (who is a commercial photographer so knows what he is talking about).
