Ideally when you edit a graphic which is placed in InDesign and come back to InDesign it goes out of date.
You can see this in the Links Panel or now post CS5.5 we have an adornment right on the graphic frame (a yellow triangle on the left corner of the image).
Clicking on it updates the image.
Can you maybe show a picture showing the problem or a video.
The problem is that I haven't actually edited the graphic and saved with the same name. I have opened the graphic, edited it, and saved as a new file, so there is no link. However, if I place it in CS5 with the 'Replace Selected Item' checked, it comes in retaining the position and proportions. But doing the same thing in CC does not work. Images below from left to right are: 1) the original; 2) dark green graphic replaced with mauve version in CS5; and 3) dark green graphic replaced with mauve version in CC – note and ignore that I have already changed the background colour in this file.

Use the relink button in the links panel to find the new version. There's an option in the prefs to preserve scale or preserve dimensions, and you probably want to preserve dimensions.
OK Cheers. That works, although I didn't find (or need to find) the preferences. It just came in same size, same place.
Then the prefs were already set to retain dimensions, or the size of the image is the same, in which case either one works.
