Too many redundant default audio tracks  CS5

I am using PPro CS5 and importing footage from a Sony PMW300.  I have tried two settings on the "New Sequence" page.  1. XDCAM HD422>1080p>XDCAM HD422 1880p30; or 2. XDCAM EX>1080p>XDCAM EX 1080p30 (HQ).  The first of these is supposed to be used with the PMW300.  It has as default 8 mono audio tracks.  The second is an older format and has as default 3 stereo audio tracks.  It is the format I have always used before getting the PMW 300.  The problem is that, with choice # 1, the 8 audio tracks from the imported clip are all identical, and mostly unnecessary.  They take up a huge amount of space in the timeline and make editing difficult.  I can pre-select a smaller number of tracks to be displayed, but if later I decide to add an audio track, for music or whatever, the new track  is instantly occupied by one of these 8 clip-derived audio tracks!!!  Using the choice #2 above, initially a very civilized single audio track appears. But the same thing happens when I add an audio track for music. Audio from the video clip automatically takes it up.  I would have to add up to 8 tracks and then add a ninth one to accommodate music.  This is absolutely crazy, and I can't figure out a way around it.  The fact that the default settings in choice #1 above is 8 mono tracks, implies that this is what Premiere expects from the camera. And indeed, there seems to be no way to dial down the number of audio tracks in the camera either.  Can someone please help?
