What exactly happens when you try to install Adobe Reader XI?

S9359338 Apr 3, 2014 4:09 PM (in response to ~graffiti)After I , finally, seem to have gotten XI uninstalled I could not open PDF
files I had downloaded with XI even though I had not deleted the free Adobe
Reader. Then I got PDF files attached to an email that gave me a message
(You cant download this PDF file without Adobe Reader please CLICK HERE to
download free Adobe Reader. I clicked and it would not download. Later I
went to Adobe.com and tried to download the free reader and it would not
download again..
What is fishy and I will explain??

S9359338 Apr 4, 2014 7:52 AM (in response to ~graffiti)The uninstaller would not download as I already hd it on computer. I tried
replacing it and it would not do that either.
It showed an icon quite similar to Version XI and I was fearful to
re-download XI but tried and it wouldn't do it..
I, then, tried downloading the Adobe reader and it did not download either
and I got a message that I had already downloaded it and tried rewriting it
and it did not work..
Maybe I have a download problem with the computer.
I dont seem to be able to read anything previously downloaded in PDF from
the Adobe XI

12. Re: Adobe XI
S9359338 Apr 4, 2014 1:21 PM (in response to Test Screen Name)I used the uninstall program that was the most recent. version. When that
did not seem to work I found it on the program manager and clicked on remove
programs. It usually does a good job and does not remove any files that
are shared.. I was doing well with the basic Ado be reader and should have
not installed anything for that purpose. anyway..
I would think anything downloaded by Adobe XI should be readable by any
other PDF reader. I did not remove the basic reader but it would not work
after XI was removed and I was unable to reload it either

~graffiti Apr 4, 2014 2:30 PM (in response to S9359338)Are you sure you went to the link I posted for the Acrobat cleaner tool? I see nowhere that it even offers Reader or McCaffee so you must be talking about something else.
The only place that does that is on the main Reader download site.
Also you keep saying "Adobe XI" which is part of what is confusing me since you seem to be referring to two different products (Reader and the Acrobat free trial).

20. Re: Adobe XI
S9359338 Apr 4, 2014 2:37 PM (in response to Test Screen Name)Originally first thing
I went to Programs manager and found Adobe XI and clicked on Remove and hit
ENTER and it seemed to be removed.
Then I was asked if I really wanted to remove it and I clicked YES
I went to the programs icons and the icon was still there and it popped up
again and asked if I didn't wish to purchase and I answered NO . I thought
it was ok but had a few pop ups where I was asked about subscribing to XI
and , then, got a download of a PDF file and it would not download as it
said I had no reader for PDF downloads and offered a Free Adobe reader and I
clicked YES but it would not download.
Then I realized I could not read a PD file that had been sent concerning
IRS filing (a 1099 form) nd realized I could not bring it up for reading
so I assumed XI had loaded and modified my original reader and went to
Adobe.com for a download of the Free version etc..

21. Re: Adobe XI
Test Screen Name Apr 4, 2014 2:42 PM (in response to S9359338)I agree with ~graffiti that part of the problem may be that you aren't using the right names for things. You just talk about Adobe XI all the time. There are two things with names similar to that, and you seem to have had both of them, but reading back over your messages I can't figure out which one you had when.
So the way you went to uninstall might have been right and might have been wrong. Are you able to tell us using the RIGHT program names what you did and are doing? I think we need to make a point of getting you to give the right names whenever you say Adobe XI, otherwise we could be sending you in completely the wrong direction.

22. Re: Adobe XI
~graffiti Apr 4, 2014 2:42 PM (in response to S9359338)Ok but it doesn't sound like you have done anything I've asked. You need to use the cleaner to remove all traces of Acrobat and Reader then re-download and install Reader.
From my earlier post:
try running the cleaner tool for Acrobat and Reader from:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
then run the latest installer from
http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Do what I am recommending above before you do anything else. Come back and let us know exactly what happens (write it down if you have to).
Thanks.

I just did it again and tried to download it when I clicked on download
the computer flicked momentarily to an agreement page when I attempted to
overwrite and try again, It is possible something attempted to download
without a progress bar or ask to SAVE or RUN.// I did click on Save before it
asked if I wanted to overwrite but never was asked to RUN and it seemed to not
be downloading anything as it was too quick and there was no progress bar

24. Re: Adobe XI
S9359338 Apr 4, 2014 2:52 PM (in response to Test Screen Name)I can see why. Adobe has a raft of products . I believe my original was
Adobe reader. They seem to want to use Icons and not English for their
titles. I can see how I would cause confusion. I did not intend to refer to any
Adobe products except the uninstaller, Adobe Reader, and Adobe Pro which
seems to be called Adobe XI and seems to have a different icon as well.
Graffiti has given it a real "College try" and I appreciate it

It may have seemd that way but it's a very small download. It downloads for me faster that I can track. You need to find out where it was downloaded to (as I also mentioned earlier), double click it to decompress the enclosed file then double-click the .exe file. Then follow the instructions.

S9359338 Apr 4, 2014 3:13 PM (in response to ~graffiti)I did find it and it may be working. . There ws never any note that it had
downloaded or to FINISH or anything. If that was the problem I would think
my download file would be full of downloads. It did seem to execute and may
be operable.. I was just able to download the basic reader and an windows
installer seemed to install and a progress bar worked. This is the first
time clicking on the compacted version did anything etc.
You may be a genius guiding the blind as this has gotten to be ridiculous.
I did exactly the same thing as previously , and, at least, 10 times
