1. Re: How do I stop two shapes touching when they overlap?
phil_w73 Aug 8, 2014 12:43 PM (in response to clazface)Several stages needed - but start with using Object>Path>Offset path on the outer fish shape to create a larger version of the fish. Take this new shape and subtract it from the front of the background shape using Pathfinder...
Then a few extra steps too...

If it is as it looks, you may:
1) Select the top shape path (group) and Object>Path>Offset by the desired gap width, then change its colour to white so you can see what you are doing and possibly undo/redo to adjust;
2) Select the offset path and the underlying path and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip unticked and Invert Mask ticked.

3. Re: How do I stop two shapes touching when they overlap?
Steve Fairbairn Aug 8, 2014 2:38 PM (in response to clazface)Assuming that the fish is properly drawn using closed paths, you could try giving it a white stroke aligned to outside.
Or else, make a copy of the fish, colour it white with a white stroke and poke the copy behind the original fish.

clazface Aug 22, 2014 1:50 AM (in response to clazface)Thanks all, I'll try out the various suggestions later today! For this design I just made a stroke, expanded it, and then subtracted it from the other shape. Would be good to learn some new things though, so thanks! x

I hope you will report your findings. It is always a pleasant challenge to guess at the solution in cases like this, where there may be different or multiple solutions depending on the actual artwork.
