    OT:  Questions about this forum

    Trevor Dennis Community Member

Does either this forum, or IE 11 auto correct?  I don't type as quickly as I used to, and I end up with a lot of typos when I try, but strangely, a lot of those typos end up as completely different words.  Like I just intended typing 'above' in another thread, and it came out as 'able'.   The l key is nowhere near the v key, and I'm short of a letter as well.  This happen much too often to be a coincidence.

Another question.  What governs when and when not, the additional formating options are available?  As I type this, I have all the options as per this toolbar, with text colour, style, tables...

Other times I just see Bold, Italic, underline and strike through as per this tool bar:

Both have HTML active.  It might be that you only get all the options when starting a new thread.  If that is the case, I'm wondering why that should be.

I think the formatting line is a bug -- the top section is clipped for some reason, in some circumstances.

For me, it is clipped when writing a new reply, but shows the full set when editing an existing post.

As for the correction - I think that is browser/OS specific.  I know that it autocorrects on my home machine, but not at the office.

            Thanks Chris.

I am still not sure where Auto correct is a browser feature or my dodgy muscle memory.

AFAICT The other features are always available in the new thread, but never in a reply, but if you were _really_ obsessive about it, you can open  a new thread in another tab > format your post, and paste it back to the original thread.  If anyone ever spots me as having done that, then probably best to do the kind thing, and just shoot me.

Interesting, this morining, c.pfaffenbichler were trying to post some code to help someone and both of use couldn't post the code without something putting a space where it didn't belong.  I tried editing the post several times, and even posting a new comment with the correction, but it still put a space where it didn't belong.

I noticed I think was last night when I used the unorder list on some paragraphs, some text below it was clipped. I undid and redid several times and it happened each time. So there is a bug at play.

I don't know about this forum, but a lot of them strip double spaces, and carriage returns at the end of the post.  Flickr does it, which tends to crowd the last line into the options below the post, so my workaround was to put a format code on the new line like <b>  (you don't need the trailing </b>)

It honours the code, even though there is nothing to apply it to, so you get a nice space between your last line and the options.

Well, there is always this little all-too-well-hidden gem...

When you "Reply" to a post, it defaults to the "Basic" editor

                      Header 2.JPG

If you "Edit" a post, then it defaults to the "Advanced" editor

                      Header.JPG

As twenty_one,      pointed out so very accurately, you can select the Advanced editor on your first reply to a post, if you need additional formatting like colors, alignments and text size changes.

ROTFL   Excellent advice Dag, and yes I am embarrassed for not spotting that, but I've always believed that RTFM is very much the last resort.  I am reminded, though, of when Noel pointed out to me the 'In reply to' line at the top of posts.  Unfortunately, my eyesight really isn't that flash.  Anyway, I have learned some stuff today.

One guy I know rejects RTFM as a matter of principle. If it isn't intuitive, he says, it isn't good enough...
