lcouillard Apr 8, 2014 8:50 AM (in response to lcouillard)When i click mode it indicated grayscale after opening - then I thought to select CMYK. Nothing has changed.

3. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
Curt Y Apr 8, 2014 8:55 AM (in response to lcouillard)Many filters work in 8 bit RGB. Although you say the image is color has that been modified in ACR?

4. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
lcouillard Apr 8, 2014 9:12 AM (in response to Curt Y)My issue is that I want the image to be in color which is how it was originally (in color) now when I open it - it appears to be grayscale and this is not what I want to apply the filter to. I need to apply the artistic filer to this image but in color I don't know why when i open it - it appears grayscale.
Sorruy Curt Y - I don't follow what "has it been modified in ACR" means?
thanks for any and all feedback!

5. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
Curt Y Apr 8, 2014 9:29 AM (in response to lcouillard)OK, my mistake, thought it was a raw file and it is a jpeg 2000 file. That is not a widely supported extension, so make sure you have the plug in to handle it.
Do all .jp2 images open as grayscale? Was it color before? Can you view it in color in Bridge?

6. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
lcouillard Apr 8, 2014 9:37 AM (in response to Curt Y)This was my question above when I wrote "Am I missing something" because I wanted to know if this happens to all JP2 files, I have never worked with them before. Unfortunately no - I tried to view the file in bridge and there too - it is grayscale.

7. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
Curt Y Apr 8, 2014 9:47 AM (in response to lcouillard)Not sure about CS6, but jpeg 2000 was an option to install in the extra folder of previous versions. Might try a non-adobe browser like Finder or Win. Exporer to see what they show. Perhaps it was sent with grayscale.
If you have Win OS try IrfanView. It is an excellent free program and will open almost anything.

8. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
John_Picton Apr 8, 2014 10:12 AM (in response to Curt Y)I was curious so had a look around. I found this site http://www.microimages.com/gallery/jp2/ that has some .jp2 test images on it. I downloaded the world map image (right click and save link not save image or it will save as a .jpg).
On my system - Windows 7 64bit Photoshop CC the file loaded in as a colour image.
So I suspect that CurtY is right that your origional image has been sent to you as a grayscale image.
Just my 2 penneth!

lcouillard Apr 8, 2014 10:59 AM (in response to John_Picton)Such a bummer but no - the orig image is in color I had one of my CADD people open it to be sure and it is in fact a color image. So frustrating.

John_Picton Apr 8, 2014 11:11 AM (in response to lcouillard)I am curious - have you tried downloading one of the images on the link I posted? If so do you get the same thing?
Cheers

11. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
John_Picton Apr 8, 2014 11:14 AM (in response to John_Picton)I am not vouching for this as I haven't tried it but another option is to use an online image conversion site such as http://www.pictureresize.org/online-images-converter.html which says it will convert jp2 files in to other formats.
Convert your original to something such as bmp (just an example) do your work and then convert it back if you need it in .jp2

12. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
lcouillard Apr 8, 2014 11:31 AM (in response to John_Picton)I did download one of the images (the first one) and opened in Photoshop - color is fine.

13. Re: opening a color .JP2 file in Photoshop CS6 it's grayscale instead
John_Picton Apr 8, 2014 11:36 AM (in response to lcouillard)In which case it sounds to me that the original program that saved the .jp2 that you are having problems with perhaps "broke the rules" in some way. So it will probably open fine in its originating program but not in others.
Interested to hear how you get on with this.
Best of luck.
Cheers
John
