Cutting and pasting/merging layers (what you see is what you get)

Is there a way to get what I see when cutting and pasting/merging layers? If I like how two layers with different blending modes/opacities look together and just want to merge what I see into one layer, is there a setting or a way to get exactly what I see without having to readjust the opacity or mode? Also, when I cut and paste a layer from one instance of a photoshop project to another, is there any way to keep the original layers properties in tact, so I end up with the same result? It seems like the results always vary, and it's a real pain in the neck. A way to smart merge or smart copy that retains the original look should be possible.
