I have a photoshop file with several photo layers. I want to be able to select a photo and move it without having to find that photo in the long list of photo files on the right. I used to be able to do this, but with my new version of Photoshop I can't find where to set this task up. can you help?
In CS6, it's in the upper left. Auto-Select Layer (Layer can be changed to Group)
The answer above was assuming that you have the Move tool selected. Personally, I find Auto Select a pain to use, so I leave it turned off, and use the Ctrl (Cmd) key which enables auto select momentarily. So long as the cursor covers the contents of the layer you want to move.
If that layer is hidden by others higher up the stack, then you are out of luck.
If you don't have a ton of layers, and want to find a particular one, hold down the Alt (Opt) key and click on each layer icon one at a time. This will turn all other layers off. To turn them back on again, Alt (Opt) click the last layer's icon again.
