1. Re: LR5 catalog error message after Windows 7 OS repair
dj_paige Apr 14, 2014 4:54 PM (in response to junior166)BSOD are almost always hardware or driver issues. Lightroom and other software rarely are the culprit. In particular, you might want to check to see if your computer cooling system (fan or liquid cooling) is working properly, if it is not your computer will overheat and BSOD will result.
Nevertheless, I hope you have a recent backup of your catalog file. That seems to be the easiest way to proceed from here ... just make a copy somewhere of the catalog file backup, and then double-click on the copy you just made.

Jim Wilde Apr 15, 2014 1:00 AM (in response to junior166)But if you don't have a backup catalog, to create a new catalog press and hold the Ctrl key while launching Lightroom and the "Select Catalog" dialog box will appear, at the bottom of that is a button to "Create a New Catalog".

junior166 Apr 15, 2014 7:35 AM (in response to junior166)I took a chance last night and updated LR5 to 5.4 hopefully it was not the culprit causing BSOD. So far so good no problems and got my catalog back. Since BSOD are caused by hardware problems I'm guessing it must have been the Canon scanner driver for Windows 7. The scanner is not that old I can't understand why the new driver caused it.

I'm not sure how you arrived at this conclusion; I can imagine there are at least a dozen likely culprits for BSOD problems.

5. Re: LR5 catalog error message after Windows 7 OS repair
junior166 Apr 15, 2014 9:39 AM (in response to dj_paige)My original post states I had upgraded LR5 to 5.4 and later installed Canon scanner shortly on another day. My conclusion was that my Canon scanner was the culprit because my original cd packaging was out of date which I did not realize until I tried to install it on my Wins 7 and message box said it was not going to work or compatible. I proceeded to Canon website to get a driver that will work with Wins 7 and installed it, a day later after using it to scan documents and started to get BSOD. It's been a few days now with no scanner installed and everything is working fine so far. Maybe by the weekend I will try to re-install the scanner or by a new one compatible with Wins 7.
