One master page or more?
check master page/s and check the text after number page marker
One section style numbers or more?
screen shot would help!
Thank you for the response.
There are two masters. On some pages, the master is correct, but not in others. This is the case for both masters. None of the page numbers are attached to a style...although I might be misunderstanding what you mean by "section style". When I check the text after page number marker, what exactly should I be looking for?

Thanks for your help
There no something clear to know what make this issue.
Just try to select all pages (select no. 1 then shift select no.55) in the from page panel and mouse right click and select apply master to pages and select master D from apply master dialog box, and see what happen.
It is still saying there are 43 pages Also tried this with C-Master. I just noticed that the error occurs through page 43, and then after that it is correct. Hmmm
Can you share the file (if you want), you can upload to dropbox then put the link here (i am working on indesign cs6).
Unfortunately I am unable to share the file, it is confidential. Maybe I just have to delete and re-create the masters
I rebuilt the masters in a completely different file and then brought them into the original file. This included re-defining the page number text variable as last page number. This still does not work. I have no idea why it's doing this.
