Lightroom 5.4 exported videos in PRE 10 problems

    LarryER

Recently started making MP4 exported slideshows in newly installed LR 5.4.  When I import them into PRE 10 projects, I'm getting playback artifacts  in the PRE 10 monitor that are very strange.  The videos seem to be playing back fine, but all of sudden, in the middle of playing the picture videos, green screens and most often red screens are interpolated between the pictures playing back.  Some of the pictures in the video are also missing in the playback.  The interpolated screens will last for up to 30 seconds in the PRE timeline.  The exported videos play fine in Windows Media Player and other playback programs.

      Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing:

      PRE 10 capture.JPG

I never had these problems with previous versions of LR exported slideshows.  I experimented loading test projects in PRE 10 with video exported from earlier versions of LR (LR4 and 5.3).  None of those earlier videos had the problems I'm now experiencing with the newly exported LR 5.4 videos

Any ideas as to why these problems might be happening now with LR 5.4 videos?  Are there any project setttings or preferences in PRE 10 that would fix this problem? Is there a bug in either program?  Or is there some other issue I'm not seeing?

      Thanks!

FYI: Windows 7 Home Premium; Intel i-7 3.5GHZ Quad Core; 8 MB memory

The slideshows from the Lightroom Slideshow Module have always been in a variety of frame sizes, but with AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) video compression, AAC  channel audio, and a .mp4 file extension. That should not be a problem for Premiere Elements. Which one of the sizes have you selected to take into Premiere Elements 10 Mac? Where you using 1920 x 1080 before and now 1280 x 720 by any chance?

Do you have any AVCHD.mp4 video that has not seen Lightroom nor gone through its Slideshow Module? If so, can they be brought into Premiere Elements 10 Mac without the red monitor display?

What video card does your computer use? NVIDIA GeForce type? If so, please read the Annoucement at the top of this forum regarding the display issues that are specifically targeting Premiere Elements 10 NIVIDIA GeForce users. But, nearly all that I have seen have involved Windows computer operating systems. But, worthwhile to take a look at that aspect of the troubleshooting.

We will be watching for further developments.

            Thanks.

Thanks John.  Below is a comparison of 2 videos from MediaInfo.  The file on the left is from LR5.4, the one on the right is from LR 4.4.

Note that the LR 5.4 MP4 slideshow export includes actual videos that are in the slideshow as well as still pictures.  Since it includes actual videos, it also includes audio.  The LR 4.4 MP4 does NOT include any audio since LR 4.4 only created the MP4 files from still pictures.

FYI: I realize now that also exported MP4 Slideshow files of still pictures only from LR 5.3.  Those files also worked fine in PRE 10. HOWEVER, I did NOT include any video files in the 5.3 exported MP4 slideshows.  Instead, I manually inserted each video as separate files in the PRE 10 project timeline.

So I ‘m guessing that the problem in PRE 10 has something to do with embedding videos in the LR 5.4 exported slideshows. I see some differences in the files data below, but I don’t know enough to know how they might impact PRE 10.  I know I CANNOT change the slideshow MP4 video export settings in LR 5.4 other than the export size.

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to insert the videos in PRE 10 projects individually, but I suspect I may have to.

Does the data below provide some explanation to the problem?

              Thanks again,

Thanks ATR.  I think the problem may have to do with embedding video files and .jpeg files together in the LR MP4 slideshow export.  I think the frame rates may be different and that messes up PRE 10.  I’ve sent some file comparison metadata info to another forum member about the exported MP4 files.  The MP4 export files from all versions of LR that load successfully into are still picture exports exclusively.

FYI: I am on Windows 7, but I have a Radeon GPU, not an NVIDIA one, so that’s not the problem.  All of the videos from all versions of LR have been 1920x1080.  Videos from all other sources than the LR slideshow export load fine into PRE 10 – no red monitor display.

Thanks for taking the time to help,

                  John,

I see the comparison didn’t display properly.  Attached it as a .pdf file.  Maybe that will help.

I see the pdf file didn’t help.  Will try a screenshot below.

What are the chances of you using a Dropbox link in the post instead to give us a sample of one of those Lightroom 5.4 Slideshow Module slideshows that display with red frame in Premiere Elements 10.

If you cannot, I will download and install Lightroom 5.4 and try to reproduce what you have done in my Premiere Elements 10 and Lightroom 5.4.

The export from the Slideshow Module should be AVCHD.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second). That export should have gone into Premiere Elements 10 without display problems.

I never say never, but I do not think that videos (if you can get them in at all) are the issue. I am trying to dust off my recollections on video inclusions in the Lightroom Slideshow Module...was it ever that you could but the video would be present as a still (probably of the first frame of the video)?

I will be traveling in the next few days, should be back to full schedule by Monday afternoon. But, I hope to get in some forum discussions when I get to my destination and a computer. So, I will try to follow your progress nonetheless.

                      More later.

                        Hi ATR,

Here is the Dropbox link for one of the videos that has the problem.

The red screen starts at around 4’05” in the preview monitor.

If you can’t replicate the problem in your PRE, it may be that my PRE has become corrupted in some way.  I will uninstall it and reinstall it and see if that fixes the problem.

                        Thanks,

FYI: Based on Mediainfo, there are some clear differences between the 5.4. and 4.4 video exports.

                          -        Also, in the PRE 10 screen capture, the video on the left from LR 4.4 is rendered properly (thin green line), while the 5.4 version won’t render.

                          -        Note also that the 5.4 video is almost double the file size of the 4.4 version.  Both contain the same number of images and are 2’27” long.

Many thanks to both of you for your help.

Please see discussion thread for the UPDATE I just sent.  There’s link to a Dropbox folder there (also below) that has the Mediainfo comparison between LR 4.4 and 5.4 that’s readable, a LR 4.4 version of the video and an LR 5.4 version of the video that has the red screen problem, and some of my comments.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was away for a few days and could not get to a computer until Monday night, tonight.

Please go to each of the links that you posted (post 8, 9, and 10) to verify that you can get them to work for you.

So far, in post 8 link....I get the message "Nothing There"; in posts 9 and 10, I can download files with .mp4 and .pdf file extensions, but I cannot open the video in players and the .pdf into the Adobe Reader. I have one latest try in the works.

I was hoping to avoid having to download and install the Lightroom 5.4 to get a closer look at its .mp4 slideshow from its Slideshow Module.

Does your Windows 7 come with a Snipping Tool. In the Search above Start Button, type in Snipping Tool to see if you have it. If so, use it to make a screen capture as jpeg to post in your thread. (Use the camera icon above the Reply where the screenshot will go). Please remember to make it the Tree View of the Media Info readout.

See how you do with that. If I can get it done in the next few hours, I will probably download and install Lightroom 5.4 and put its .mp4 slideshow from its Slideshow Module through Premiere Elements 10.

                              More later.

Photos here have meaning only in terms of pixel dimensions. So, what are the pixel dimensions of these photos? Are they exceeding 1920 x 1080 16:9?

Thanks ATR.  Please disregard the link in post 8.  My bad – either link in post 9 or 10 works and goes to the same place.  I’m a Dropbox newbie and copied one link in post 9 and “shared” the other one in post 10. But both links go to the same Dropbox folder. Sorry to confuse everyone.

I don’t know why you can’t download and play the videos or view the pdf file.  I’m able to download them and play them with no problems.  The pdf is a Mediainfo tree view comparison of the LR5.4 and 4.4 videos.  Below is a set of screenshots of the 2 page comparison taken from the pdf.  Double click on them to enlarge them so they're readable.

All photos in both videos are cropped to 16x9, 1920x1080.  They are exactly the same photos.

I am not seeing anything in those MediaInfo readouts that I would associate with the red video.

I am in the process of downloading and installing Lightroom 5.4 Windows 8.1 64 bit. I will generate a slideshow in the Slideshow Module 1920 x 1080 29.97 fps .mp4 and see what that looks like in Premiere Elements 10 on the same computer.

Please let me know if you want me to add anything to my slideshow....did you say that you had video and photos in the 5.4 one?

I will be watching for anything that you would like me to put into my test .mp4.

                                  Thanks.

Thanks ATR.  I stripped the videos out of the 5.4 slideshow export to keep the file size reasonable.  I still got the red screen, even without videos. Here's the screen capture showing both the LR 4.4 version and the LR 5.4 version in the same PRE project.  The 4.4 renders fine (thin green line), but the 5.4 video does not.  And has the red screen.

By the way, are you using a special presets in setting up for this export from the Slideshow Module?

As far as I know there are no special presets in the LR 5.4 slideshow module.  I just set it to 1920x1080.  Are there others?  If so, I have not knowingly set them.

Good news and not so good news.

Lightroom 5.4 was downloaded and slideshows (just photos and one with photos and video) created in the Slideshow Module of the program. Export was as AVCHD (video) AAC (audio).mp4 (1080p, 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second).

The .mp4 files were imported into Premiere Elements 10 (on Windows 7 64 bit as well as Windows 8.1 64 bit). Project preset was

                                              NTSC

                                              DSLR

                                              1080p

                                              DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97

Playback was good, no red or green frames. I was suprised that the slideshow accepted the video inclusion (my MPEG4.avi) for full play back in the .mp4. I was expecting my .avi to be represented in the slideshow just a the first frame of the video.

If you are sure that you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer, let us try this

                                              1. Open a new Premiere Elements 10 project with the project preset

                                              NTSC

                                              DSLR

                                              1080p

                                              DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97

Then import from the computer hard drive some jpeg photos that went into the Lightroom 5.4 project.

                                              From 10, export that Timeline via Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30.

Then, try to import that export MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 into the Premiere Elements 10 project.

Do you see any signs of red or green frames?

Then let us see what we have.

Thanks again ATR.  I tried your suggestions and a few other experiments.

                                                1) I have the latest Quicktime player.

                                                2) No problem at all importing the LR5.4 exported pictures directly into PRE 10, using the project settings you specified.

                                                3) The video of the still pictures played fine in PRE 10, no red or green screens.

                                                4) Shared this video as MP4 H.264 1920x1080p AVCHD.

                                                5) Imported the shared video back into PRE 10; same result: no red or green screens.

                                                Tried this second experiment:

                                                1) Started a new project in PRE 10

                                                2) Used the project settings you suggested in Post 19.

                                                3) Took one of the LR5.4 exported slideshow files and loaded it into the new project.

                                                4) Played it back, and alas, the red screen appeared again about 4 minutes into the playback, and lasted for about 40 seconds

                                                5) Exported that file using the AVCHD settings in Post 19.

                                                6) Played that exported file back in Windows Media Player and the red screen was there.  I was hoping that the red screen was just an artifact in the preview mode, but it's not.

Tried this experiment with the above second LR5.4 file:

                                                1) Selected: Timeline/Render Work Area

                                                2) Result: Video plays, nothing rendered.  There is no red line above the video, and no green line that usually shows after rendering.

FYI: In LR5.3, I too had the videos included in the slideshows represented by only the first frame.  Only in LR5.4 does the video fully play in PRE 10.

The workaround in Post 19 is not the workflow I want to use.  I have thousands of pictures that I can easily arrange in the LR slideshow module. They are not so easy to arrange in PRE 10.  I don't want to have thousands of pictures in each PRE 10 project.  It's much easier for me to just work with a few slideshows from LR.

Appreciate all your help so far, and any other suggestions you might have.

I am not seeing any red or green frames with Lightroom 5.4 .mp4 slideshows in Premiere Elements 10. Let us compare notes while I still have Lightroom 5.4 tryout installed.

                                                  1. Is this red and green frames associated with one particular batch of photos? You mention that is this problem does not exist for the full duration of the .mp4. Can you pin point which photos are involved? Are there photos actually replaced by red or green or are all the photos there but have red or green between some of them?

                                                  2. What are all you settings in the Lightroom 5.4 slideshow module (in the field in that right side column)?

                                                  3. Are all your .mp4 slideshows just photos, no effects, transitions....

                                                  4. What is happening to these photos before they get into the Slideshow Module?

Later tonight I will try to go back into Lightroom 5.4 to see if I can force the issue to surface.

                                                  More later.

                                                  Thanks.

                                                      Hello again ATR,

Your post 21 questions and my answers are below.

I'm noticing one major difference between LR5.4 exported slideshows and the previously exported slideshows: the LR5.4 exports include an audio track for the entire length of the slideshows.  Slideshows exported in previous versions did NOT include any audio. In the 5.4 version, there is no audio in the still pictures portion of the export, but there is audio in the videos. When dragging the slideshow clip to the timeline, there is audio the entire duration of the clip. When I unlink audio and video, or delete audio, the red frames are still there.  Not sure if this difference is meaningful, but I thought I should mention it.

I'm wondering if I should delete and reinstall PRE 10.  What do you think?

                                                      Thanks,

                                                      >>NO, at least I don't think so.  There are variety of photos and videos from my wife's Panasonic Lumix camera and from my Nikon DSLR.  We've used both cameras before with other photos and videos, and did not encounter these problems in PRE 10.  However, all of the previous slideshows were exported using LR5.3 or earlier versions of LR.

They are edited in the Develop module of LR 5.4 using the current LR process.  I add titles in the Library module and rearrange them in the Library module and the Slideshow module.  All of my Nikon pictures are resized to 16x9 aspect ratio so they will display full screen on a wide screen high definition television.  I've been following this workflow in LR for years for all of my slideshows.

Before any uninstall, ccleaner run through, reinstall of Premiere Elements 10, maybe let us take another look at the video card/graphics card that the computer is using? So, recap time...have you verified that you have the latest version of the card's driver according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?

Yet, didn't you say that the .mp4 slideshows (old) import into Premiere Elements 10 without issue at this time? It is just the .mp4 slideshows (new) that are importing and exporting with red/green displays in the video?

Based on that, I would be inclined to uninstall reinstall Lightroom 5.4.

I just downloaded and installed the lastest available driver for my Radeon 6738 video card (driver dated 12/18/2013).  No luck - still red screens in the videos.

Yes, older slideshows imported into PRE 10 play fine.

FYI: There is quite a bit of discussion about similar problems in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

If the old imports and presents without red/green but not the new, that seems to take out Premiere Elements 10 and the computer as the problem. What has changed would seem to me to be in Lightroom 5.4.

Yet, I have downloaded and installed Lightroom 5.4 and put it through the paces of this issue and have not run into the red or green video in Premiere Elements 10. So, that would encourage my thinking in terms of your Lightroom 5.4 and its download/install/operation.

In the case of the red video in the links, one user claims that red video is a sign of a decoder problem. But, here they are talking about a whole video with red frames because the program does not support that MXF format. In contrast, you are experiencing red/green splashed into your video periodically.

If it were not for my results and the fact that the old .mp4 slideshows work fine in your computer environment, I would go after the video card/graphics card driver.

Is your Lightroom 5.4 purchased or a tryout from Adobe?

I will think about this some more.

At this time, have you worked out the details where you could post a link to only a small sample of the video that displays red/green areas during it duration?

We will be watching for further developments.

                                                            Thanks.

You should be able to download and play the videos and import them into PRE 10.  The red screen shows up in my PRE 10 at about 1'50 seconds into the video.  Interesting - one time I played it and there were no red screens.  Then the next time they were there.

At playback of the Timeline content, these red frames were seen in the monitor and not in the content displaying in the Timeline Video Track 1.

That worked to get rid of the red frames, however the resulting video had some periodic light flashes during the entire playback.

I suspect that Lightroom 5.4 is "different" and this "difference" may be impacting the conforming of the video in Premiere Elements 10. Pure speculation since I am not seeing any conforming progress bar when your .mp4 slideshow is imported.

There are times when the matter presents differently if one moves the Timeline Indicator manually across the red area versus pressing the spacebar or hitting the Play button on the Edit area monitor.

One option would be for me to purchase PRE 12.  I don't mind doing that, but what I have never liked about PRE is that newer versions don't sucessfully maintain compatibility with projects created in earlier versions of PRE.  The result is that I have to maintain multiple versions of PRE in order to edit older projects. At least that's been my experience.

The option that might work best is uninstalling my current LR 5.4, reinstalling LR5 and then processing the update again.

                                                                        Many thanks,

Used my LR5.2 dvd version and reinstalled it.  Updated to version 5.4. Exported test file (same one you looked at) and imported it into PRE 10. No luck, the red screen was still there.

Same result, red screen still there.

I conclude the problem actually began in version 5.2, not 5.4.  FYI: I just bought 5.2 in mid-February, and I realize now that I had not used it to export any slideshow videos until mid-April, after I had updated to 5.4.  That's why I thought the red screen problems were due to 5.4.  My mistake.

Decided to use PRE 12 trial version and see what happens.  Things seem to be intermittently working OK in 12, but my first import of the trial version briefly showed the red screen.  At the next play back of the file,  the playback of the picture fading in at frame 3578 lasted until frame 3802, then there was a green frame for one frame at frame 3803, then the picture resumed until frame 3812, then the red frame showed up at frame 3813 lasting until frame 3912.

However, stepping backwards frame by frame in the playback monitor, there were no red or green screens.  The next time I played forward, everything displayed properly. The picture beginnning at frame 3578, however, "jumped" to the next picture at frame 3842.  It did not fade from picture to picture as specified in the LR5.4 exported file. There seem to be a problem during during the fade transition (.6 seconds) between pictures created in LR 5.4.

Finally, as a last step, I recreated the exported file in LR 4.4, exported it from LR 4.4 slideshow, and imported it into PRE 12.  Played back perfectly.  So I don't thing the issue has anything to do with my video driver or other configuration on my computer.

As I said, this behavior is intermittent. If you move the time indicator you often see no red or green screens.

Baffling.  I will have to revert to LR4.4 to make and export my slideshows.

Thanks again for all your help.
