How can i fix blank "File Info...." in Photoshop CS5?

    Vanillaman Community Member

I wanted to add metadata to some of my photos. However, when I attempted to open "File Info" there was nothing in the dialogue box. It was just empty. Is there a method for fixing this apart from reinstalling Photoshop?

          Use Bridge to edit Metadata.

Thank you. However, it doesn't really answer my question?

Try updating Flash.  Also check your XMP directory.  On Windows, it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\3.0.  There should be lots of subfolders containing each of the different panels within the info panel.  They should all have a swf file in the bin folder, including the main 3.0 sub-folder.  Each folder should also have a file called manifest.xml.

Thank you. There is is no manifest.xml. I read somewhere that I just needed to create an xml and place it in one of the folders. However, I don't know what I'm supposed to write in the xml file and where to put it??

No you don't want to write your own, unless you're creating your own custom metadata panel.  You might have to reinstall PS to have them install properly, unless you know someone else who has CS5 and just copy the whole file structure.

Sorry. Perhaps I didn't explain properly. I don't mean `write my own' xml file. Someone suggested creating another copy of the missing one, but stopped short of how to do that and what data it included? Perhaps the missing file is the manifest.xml as I previously mentioned. What information does that contain? Also, I don't wish to reinstall PS again while there is an alternative solution and I've already tried that??

This might also have something to do with your graphics card.

I don't have cS5 loaded, but it might be close to what CS6 has  There are some differences in the acutal panels between the two, but that might be in relation to the swf files.  The main file structure looks something like this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\3.0 with these folders under 3.0: AMT, bin, custom, panels.  There are no files under this folder.

Under the "panels" folder there are all the folders of the tabs: Advanced, audioData, camera, categories, description, dicom, gpsData, history, IPTC, IPTCExt, mobile, origin, rawpacket, and videoData.

Under each of these are folders: bin and location.  And the one file manifest.xml.

                      Advanced:

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this. I should have bookmarked the possible solutions I read elsewhere, as they suggested creating or downloading a missing xml file.

As I also mentioned, it might be the graphics card.  See:

                          https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101009142157AAMIQCy

It might be that whatever card you have isn't sending info that PS can use to detect what card you have.  Looks like even brand new cards can cause this, as the older version of PS doen't recognize them.

You haven't said what operating system your using.

For windows maybe this will work:

                            http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/41020959

                            this is what it says:

                            "

I found this remedy and IT WORKS!
(I am running Win 7 Professional 64-bit and Photoshop CS5 Ext)

Create a new text file named XMP.cfg (make sure the extension is cfg and not txt).

The only text that needs to be in that file is as below:

                            C:\

                            Copy the file to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\FlashPlayerTrust
(create the directory if not already there).

Restart the Adobe application and check the File Info"

                            If you go to

                            C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\FlashPlayerTrust

do you have a file named

                            AdobeXMPFileInfoCS5.cfg

R_Kelly, the OP is using Win 7.  There was another post in a similar thread:

                              http://forums.adobe.com/message/6318120#6318120

I saw that link that you posted also, and would be leary about making a trust file that blanketed your entire hard drive.  Seems to me that would allow any hacker to install a flash program anywhere on your computer.

Thank you. I got as far as: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\  However, there was no FlashPlayerTrust and no file named AdobeXMPFileInfoCS5.cfg either??

It might be best to unistall/reinstall photoshop cs5.

Just create the rest of the folders.  The config file is just a plain text file with the extension .cfg.  All you do is put the path to where the file info panels are.  It should be:

                                    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP

That wouldn't be a bad idea, R_Kelly.  Especially if creating the trust file doesn't work.

I already tried reinstalling previously. When I follow the path, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP, all that is listed are folders: 2.0, 3.0 and the Illustrator.txt file. Where do I go from there? Also, if I create a new text file named XMP.cfg, as suggested, what are its contents and where do I place it if there is no FlashPlayerTrust file??

                                        • 17. Re: How can i fix blank "File Info...." in Photoshop CS5?
                                          Chuck Uebele ACP/MVPs

This is the contents of the trust file.  The trust file and the cfg file are the same thing.  You can stop at the folder XMP, as that should give Flash permisstion to run any flash (swf) file in that folder or any in a subdirectory of that folder, so that will cover all the way down to you 2.0 and 3.0 folders.

                                          C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP

Thank you. So I created the XMP.cfg.txt file with this as the only text: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP. I then placed it into the "Custom File Info Panels" folder. I started up Photoshop and opened an image, then went to "File Info..". Still a blank dialogue box appears. I even tried placing the XMP.cfg.txt file in just the XMP folder, but still nothing worked??

No, you need to name the file with the extension .cfg and do not put the txt at the end.  It needs to be a cfg file not a txt file.  Also you need to put that file in the folder:

                                              C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\FlashPlayerTrust

If those folders don't exists, make them.
