    Low Quality Print. Add Contrast?

I'm dealing with Amazon Createspace for my memoir about my marriage to a mad jazz musician.  It ncludes about 100 photos B&W of varying quality, all scanned at hi res and carefully modified to make them pretty. When the print proof of the book came back (on ordinary uncoated paper) they were pure mud.  Three Shades of Gray.  Black is gray, gray is gray, white is gray.  Well, pure white is white.  Okay, trying to deal with that and would appreciate any and all opinions here.  What I'm trying first is upping the contrast like mad in various ways, doing the thing with the high pass filter applied as overlay, and then, when that doesn't seem like enough, applying the poster edges filter.  Have submitted another pdf for proof.  Haven't got the book back yet.  Here's an example of what I'm doing. Before and After. I hate massacring these photos, but want them to be VISIBLE.
