use the volume property of the soundtransform class.
thanks, kglad. I've tried a variety of things. Google only produces actionscript 2.0 examples, or links to pay-for-it tutorials. eek.
Understanding classes is still my weakness with AS 3 though I've crafted an elaborate video/paypal/art gallery which I'll post later. This is the last thing that doesn't work in that application.
var myquiet:SoundTransform = new SoundTransform();
no error, but no work either! must be close

Thank you very much. You are so helpful. The Adobe documents which don't include examples are very difficult to make sense of.
I got it all working and am very pleased. In case anyone else is in this perplexing situation, I'm including a bit more code, in which one mute button alternately mutes volume and allows volume. I used a movie clip with four different states/frame labels.
What I'm discovering with AS 3 is that it is really quite pleasant to use but the documentation makes it seem harsh and unfriendly to the beginner.
