Text caption style preview different from the style

    Sreekanth_S Community Member

      Hi

I am playing with custom text captions in Captivate 7.0.1.237. I have created BMP file set (five files numbered 1 to 5) by name Descriptive Text Caption and placed them in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 7 x64\Gallery\Captions. I have created a FCM file and made changes to the fonts.ini appropriately.

For testing purposes, I am creating files with different color combinations and saving it as the same Descriptive Text Caption1.bmp (basically overwriting the file).

      For example:

      1. I create a red colored caption, test it in Captivate.
      2. Then, go back to my graphic editor, create a new file - yellow colored caption, but save it as Descriptive Text Caption1.bmp.
      3. Close Captivate and clear preferences.
      4. Open Captivate again, test the yellow colored caption and repeat the entire process again.

I did that 5-6 times. In one of those iterations, I had created a brown colored caption and then replaced that with blue colored caption. Now, despite closing the Captivate and clearing the preferences, I still see the brown style in Styles Preview and the same is inserted on the slide as well. However, the Caption style list shows the blue colored caption appropriately.

Where is it picking up the deleted caption from? Please advise.

Captions can be cached either inside the CPTX project file or in the Theme file.

Try opening another Blank project CPTX and use a different theme to the one you were playing with when you created these custom captions.

Do the captions then still show up in the lists?

Thanks for your quick reply Rod.

I did what you suggested, created a blank CPTX and changed the theme to Green and I still see the custom caption I created in the list. But of course, the preview and the one which I have created are different.

Do you have Captivate 7? If so, in this new CPTX file, when you select a caption object, does it show an active button in the Properties tab to Delete Unused Caption Images?

Yes, it does. Here is the screenshot. On clicking that, I get Green, Red, and Yellow captions as unused ones.

Even here, you can notice other issues like the selected callout is "blank" (the one without any pointers) and the caption color before the caption name is blue, even though the selected caption is brown.

Yep.  I think what is happening here is that you've got a massive confusion of different versions of your captions because you chose to use the same filenames after changing colours etc.

Since you've just been using the same filenames, Captivate doesn't think they are different.  It doesn't look at the date modified, just the filename.

The recommended workflow when creating custom captions (and custom image buttons as well) is to always use disposable project files (not ones that belong to a course), debug the look and feel of your captions BEFORE you finalise your naming, delete all old file versions of the captions, throw away the CPTX files afterward.  And you may even find you need to delete your Preferences as well.  Who knows where else these things may be hiding out.

I've also discovered that Theme files can also seem to harbour custom captions.  (I modified.) one of the Themes that came with Cp7 and then saved it as my own theme.  But when I tried to find one of the captions in my Gallery > Captions folder it wasn't there.  These appeared to be custom captions saved in the theme (something I didn't think was possible).

                    Thanks for the tip.

I am doing almost everything you are suggesting (disposable projects and deleting preferences after every test), except the NOT finalizing file names. I thought of saving few minutes in creating the BMP and its related files by using the final file names rightaway.

I will test your suggestion and get back.
