CS6 Pantone libraries are not in numerical order

    Michael Brown12 Community Member

In fact, they are random. For example, when creating a duotone, I click in the color area and I'm given a list of the Pantone colors in that library. If I click on the up arrow it gives me seven colors at a time. A reasonable person woud assume that the seven colors shown would be replaced with the next seven colors in numerical order. For example, if colors 250 through 256 are shown, a click on the up arrow should produce colors 257 through 263. It does not. Here is what I got on each subsequent click when starting at 2562: 7436, 517, 250, 7646, 243. These six numbers have no relationship to each other. Selecting a color in these libraries is simply random. You must keep clicking until ithe color you want just happens to show up. The numbers don't even go generally up or generally down. They are random. What is Adobe's problem? How to alphbetize or put numbers in order is a skill taught in elementary school. Is there anyway to make the colors come up in order? If so, why is random the default?

      Thanks,

      MHBrown

The Pantone swatches and color books are in the exact order that Pantone gives them to us, which is in the exact order that they appear in Pantone's printed books (which we verify before shipping them).

If you want a specific number, just type that number to go to it.

And yes, Pantone did insert newer numbers and swatches in the middle of the older Pantone books to create the latest Pantone books.

So the numbers will not be in order.

            What is Adobe's problem?

With Pantone+ Pantone has re-ordered its colors but kept the old numbers.

How to alphbetize or put numbers in order is a skill taught in elementary school.

Whereas manners should at least have been rudimentarily instilled at entering that institution of learning.

Do you select spot colors based on the screen display or do you look them up in Pantone’s Formula Guides?

If the latter how old are the ones you use?

Adobe puts out a list of numbered colors, but does not put them in numerical order. I question the wisdom of such a systm and THAT is bad manners? Please. That is just about the thinnest skin I think I've ever seen on a company. The blame cannot be put on Pantone. Photoshop is an Adobe product and everything about it is their responsibility. Adobe has the muscle and the industry clout to demand that Pantone put the numbers in order. Really, is that an "ill-mannered" request? Please feel free to show me any other system is named with numbers where the numbers are not used for sequential organization. It certainly boggles the mind why Pantone would not put their colors in order, but it is also worth asking Adobe why they don't advocate for their customers and insist on it. By the way, as far as I can tell there is no Pantone search field in Photoshop CS6. At least I can't find it. Chris Cox, you must be thinking of Illustrator or InDesign which both have this feature. Why Adobe feels this is good for AI and ID, but not needed for Pshop is another good question.

Pantone is a big business, and "most" big business don't meddle in others' business models - unless you're Apple.  Yes, there is a search.  You select the button that says: "Color Library" and when the Pantone UI comes up you just type in a number.  There is no field, you just type the number.

No, Adobe gets a list from Pantone, and puts that list out *exactly matching the printed Pantone books*.

Adobe does not chagne the order of the swatches.

And no, we follow what Pantone produces - we want our representation and their printed books to match.

And Pantone made the decision to introduce new colors and new swatch numbers out of numerical order in their books.

This is not even a request - this is something we cannot do, plus a simple misunderstanding the nature of the swatch numbers in the Pantone color books.

There is no search field in the Photoshop color book picker - you just type the number and it goes to that numbered swatch. That has been there as long as Photoshop has supported color books.

»That is just about the thinnest skin I think I've ever seen on a company.«

I am not an Adobe employee and as fas as I can tell Mr.Cox, who does work for Adobe but is not getting paid to help people on this Forum, would not point out some poster’s misconduct here.

What gave you the idea you were communicating with Adobe proper on this user-to-user Forum?

»The blame cannot be put on Pantone.«

                      Wrong.

»I question the wisdom of such a systm and THAT is bad manners? Please.«

But you did not just ask »Why is it that …« you asked what »Adobe’s problem« is, didn’t you?

And did you not then make remarks about the elementary school curriculum?

Now that does not seem to have a direct connection to the matter at hand at all, so I assumed you meant that derogatively.

Was my conclusion wrong and are you just in the habit of enriching your queries with unconnected observations for example about the system of education?

                      »Really, is that an "ill-mannered" request?«

Which sentence/s in the original post qualify as a request in your opinion?

Also you may want to post Feature Requests on the proper Forum:

                        Hello from France,

If I just type the number of a Pantone, it works with some swatches, but not for Pantone+ Solid Coated-336. Why?

                        Thanks
