very slow shared objects in AWS AMS 5.0.4 (5.0.3?)

I have an application that uses shared objects with AMS. I use shared objects to check that AMS clients are still alive by using a simple time-based counter. The server increments the count, and the client writes the count back to 0 when it sees this. If the count gets too high, the client is no longer alive. This has worked fine on FMS 4.0, FMS 4.5, AMS 5.0, and on AWS AMS 5.0.1 from ami-08cd7261.

For ami-e1070688, this use of shared objects fails. The shared objects are acquired and updated too slowly. Is this expected of the new version? I am not sure exactly whether the version is AMS 5.0.3 or 5.0.4. There are different versions displayed in different places and I am not sure which is accurate.
