Why are layers not automatically labeled?

I use photoshop every day and just got CS2 Indesign for a book I am laying out. One thing I just cannot figure out is why layers in Indesign are not automatically labeled like in PS. For example if I type the word cat in a new layer in a text box, the layer is just assigned a color. Whereas in Photoshop it would say cat. Same goes for graphics, in Photoshop you see a small thumbnail of the graphic whereas in Indesign it is a just another color. Please tell me there is some option I cannot find that can change this? It will be impossible to work with many layers just relying on colors an I do not want to have to manually name each layer. That is ridiculous.
